Hey Guys:

What's up with "Founding Member, Senior Member, New Member" status labels? Does being a senior member, for example, provide the holder with a higher status and more privelege than a starting member for example? Does it mean you are held in higher regard as a flamenco?

Maybe I'm going to get on a soap box here for a minute, but I have to get this off my chest. Open forums are about everyone being equal. It encourages fresh opinions and ideas that otherwise would not appear because the forum was not accessible to everyone. Now, not only is this place Member only, but it is also "Classed", which amounts to an elitest approach to membership. To me, this says that before too long, you will all whither on the flamenco vine; stuck in your own rutts with no freshness of ideas and growth.

I would encourage you to make this an open forum, available to anyone on the "Free Internet". Remember, we are all children of the world... here to share ideas and opinions. There is no class system intrinsic to the universe... we're just here for a while, so why not open up and share?

Thanks for the space! :-)

Merle -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 18:54:05)

Hey, Paul, I think that 'status' thing your talking about is just part of the software. As soon as you reach a certain number of posts, it changes your status. Simon could probably disable it, as it really is meaningless.

Believe me, I'm no Senior member!! ;>)

Send me one of your Peteneras palos!!

Merle

Escribano -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 19:40:40)

Hi Paul,

The rating is a default of the software and pretty meaningless, I agree. It can't be disabled as far as I can see, but I'll look into it.

This forum is free to you (but not to me), just requires admin approval. At the moment the wishes of the users of this forum (as polled) is to remain with admin approval.

Ron.M -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 20:47:19)

Paul,
The system is infallible. This must be known as the only Universal Truth.
It rates only members worthy of such honour.
You may strive many a year to rid yourself of Junior Mebership class.
However, strive as you may, that is the system!
Come on man!.....The software is designed to judge who are "regular" posters and who are not!
It's not a "human" decision!!

By the way Paul, I thought you'd be over in the UK for this Golf that is invading our TV screens at the moment?
God, has a year passed that quickly?
How's things going with your son out in Iraq?
Any news on some relief time yet?

Ron

Paul Bruhns -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 21:02:08)

Merle:

I will definitely send you an example of my playing the Peteneras... But I just learned them from listening to some recordings... they just follow the cante letras, which are pretty basic, and well, the way I play them, you might or might not recognize them. LOL Drop me an e-mail address, and I'll send you a file... what kind of MB limit do you have?

---Paul

Merle -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 21:11:30)

Paul, my email address is in my profile, but, it's

mmusicdog7@aol.com

I don't know what my MB size for email, but send me some sample of yours. From all my time on Flamenco Teacher forum and this forum, you and I are the only one's that like peteneras, that I know of!! ;>) I absoutely love them!!

Hang around here, and I'll see what I can do to get you a 'Senior Member' status. I might have to beg, but, don't worry, I WILL GET IT DONE!!!! ;>)

(don't listen to what RonM says about years and years before you become one, I will see to it that you are accepted at any level)...(did that make sense)? ;>)

I'll be waiting for the peteneras email...

Merle

Hey RonM, just curious...do you think God will answer you? I wonder what status God has in this forum? Do you think he can over ride the Admin?

(OK, now I waiting for the lightening to hit me)!! (sorry)! ;>)

Merle

Merle -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 21:21:48)

Oh, Paul, by the way, come and join our tangos project! It's a good way to sharpen your tangos skills, plus, if Florian can pull this off, he might sell it, and we could become millionairs!! Hey, wierder things have happened...

Merle

Paul Bruhns -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 21:22:49)

Ron:

You really mean it "It's not a "human" decision!! " hehehehe... that cracks me up. You mean a machine logic decision?

I really want to answer your post, but I'd rather do it via a personal e-mail. I did not get to Scotland this year, and you would have known if I did... you would have found me knocking on your door!!!! Guitar in hand!!!!

Anyway, I'll be there most certainly next summer for the Open Championship, and for the following couple of weeks, as Scotland is where my wife would have us live if the choice were that simple.

Regards,
Paul

Ron.M -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 22:08:39)

Ha Ha! Paul,
Tell your wife there are some lovely houses going fairly cheap on the A939 between Cockbridge and Tomentoul. (About 60 miles from me)
The people in each of these villages don't see each other for at least three months of the year 'cos the road is blocked with snow!
Still, you've got the guitar, some radio and tv and some beer in the fridge....
so who cares?....see them in the summer.

Merle,
Watch out if there are any thunderclouds's overhead!
After all....yer livin' in Mormon territory there R kid!

Ron

Thomas Whiteley -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 23:19:02)

Paul;

Seems like my status has changed almost daily. Also, I think I have jumped back and forth between one status and another. I should object being called a Senior Member! Just because I am 61 years old does not mean I am a senior! [:)]

I have to agree with you though - I would rather not see any "brand" below a members name.

Now if you want to be administrator you have to have more posts than Simon. Then you get to maintain the site, do all the coding, pay the bills and put up with us! [:)]

Merle -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 23:48:33)

"The people in each of these villages don't see each other for at least three months of the year 'cos the road is blocked with snow!"

WHAT! Give me a break NOW, come on! YOU WANT SNOW?? Remember where the Winter Olympics were held? Uhh! In my back yard! I live in Utah! (oh, some little snow in a village somewhere is a big deal?)!! ;>)

Do you like to snow ski? (WHITE) SNOW, (GREEN) MONEY, (BLUE) CROSS!!

Merle

Merle -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 20 2003 23:56:19)

Tom, you have me laughing so hard!

Yea, that last paragraph shows me...!!

You funny GrassHopper!....

Merle

bailoro2000 -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 21 2003 7:25:36)

To "senior member Merle"

Hey Merle. I just love the Peteneras palo. I have seen some really good dance interpretations of the Peteneras legend using all sorts of props. Maybe not what would appeal to a guitarist, but good anyway.

Jim.

Escribano -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 21 2003 8:09:36)

Tom, your status changes with the wane of the moon and the tides of the sea (or is that the same thing?).

The members ranking is going guys, just as soon as I can find the right bit of code. I have never come across such a bunch of ingrates in all my weeks of forum admin [;)]

Paul Bruhns -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 21 2003 11:31:45)

Simon:

I don't want to appear ungrateful. There are a lot of good features in the interface here. I just have a "personal" problem with labeling member's status. Thanks for providing this virtual place in the world where we can all share and get together. I'll try not to whine too much :-)

Regards,
Paul

Miguel de Maria -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 21 2003 13:34:28)

Paul maybe when you have two stars you will feel more invested in the caste system and will want to preserve it. I know I am waiting for my second one!

Thomas Whiteley -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 22 2003 0:25:18)

Simon;

ROFL! [:)]

That's us! Ingrates! And we love every minute of it!

Thomas Whiteley -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 22 2003 0:26:49)

Paul;

It is better to wine than to whine! [:)] Anyway, you have to speak your peace to be honest.

Thomas Whiteley -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 22 2003 0:28:15)

Michael;

You did it! It must be that phase of the moon thingy! [:)]

Escribano -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 22 2003 9:44:45)

I know, I was teasing Paul.

I sympathise with you view but do find it rather useful on forums to get some idea of who is addressing me and vice-versa. Perhaps a better way to run this is to use the "Rate This Post" feature more. Then posters are building peer value, not a machines?

Jim Opfer -> RE: The Class System (Jul. 22 2003 16:09:31)

Hey Ron,
Been there seen and done it. We (wife, kids and I) used to go up to Chapletown a couple of weeks at a time and boy when it snows!
I know a girl who lives in a converted Church half way along that road and I don't know how she gets by in the winter.[&:]
Anyway, back to flamenco.
Jim.
