Hi all,

When I was buying my guitar I was told to service it properly during the first 8 months, meaning to change the strings often and before they get old.

I did so for more than a year and now the guitar sounds almost the same with old or new strings on.

How much does your guitar sound degrade with strings getting old? and when you buy a virgin guitar do you service it? and if so for how long?

It depends on how intensly you play, and sweat when you play. I just met a guy that had not changed the strings in 15 years. The basses were almost rust colored, but still had brightness. He never plays the thing.

On the other hand I can kill a set of strings in one night if I have a long intense show and I sweat a lot. Meaning I have to change the bass strings at least, the next day or before my next gig.

But seriously, I play and sweat though not everyday and the strings get worn. Finally the D string breaks and I change the 3 bass strings but the guitar sounds almost the same as with old strings.

With my old guitar just one day after changing the strings the sound was already boring and the strings lost their brightness and I could clearly hear the big and shiny sound right after changing strings.
