Hi guys,
I know a lot of you come from various musical backgrounds as I have myself,
but yesterday I was totally taken aback by a Heavy Metal/ Flamenco tune done on another Flamenco Forum, with a call for "feedback".
On a FLAMENCO Forum??
I really mean it guys.
I was listening to a Terremoto Album today, but after that I could appreciate that he didn't quite catch it right without the Kick Drum, Cajon, Fretlless Bass, and a Spanish "Van Halen" lookalike "shreddin'" all over it!
This is getting to the stage when anyone can define Flamenco in their own terms!
In fact the very first "pop" Flamencos were the Beatles with "I wanna Hold your Hand"
which is perfect Tangos, if you want to revisit it again!
Give us a break por favor!

I'm assuming from your post that you don't care for 'Flametal' music. Actually, I was curious to hear it, but my download program gave me an estimated 23 minutes to download it and I didn't want to hear it that much. [:)] There was an interesting thread about where you draw the line in calling something Flamenco. However, to the credit of the guy that posted the 'Flametal' mp3, he did specify that he did not consider it Flamenco or speed metal. I have no problem with people doing this kind of thing - mixing and matching musical styles. It's when people use the label 'Flamenco' for marketing purposes for music that's clearly not Flamenco that bothers me. I'm going to stop now. I don't want to start a similar thread here. Somebody may ask me to define what I consider legitimate Flamenco and I don't know how to define it, but I know it when I hear it. [8D]

There is absolutley no problem about this.
The "Modernisers" are sayin' If I don't like Van Halen or Stevie Vaie.....
Then I don't *really* like Flamenco.
So Flamenco followers....You've Been Told!

As Artie Johnson on the old "Laugh In" TV show would say, "Verrrry Interesting"!

In defense of young Mr. Woods, he is a very talented guitarist. I have heard him play straight flamenco and was very impressed. He is obviously taking this quite serious, as the fellow he is working with is Jason McGuire of the San Francisco area. Jason is a monster flamenco player if you have not heard him. Click on his web site at the bottom of the Flametal page and listen to his clips. Trust me, if he was Spanish you would be hearing about him…he’s that good.

I liked it. Ben has said that this is NOT flamenco nor is he trying to sell it as flamenco like some of those nuevo flamenco guys.

That cat Jason McGuire is very good. He used to live in this area and I got to see him many times. The man's playing sends chills up my spine.

I was over egging things a bit last night due to certain moderating brain functions being temporarily unavailable because of demasiado plonk! LOL!
No, really, Ben Woods is a really good player.
I heard a couple of his clips about two years ago, where he was just playing straight flamenco guitar and I was very impressed.
He's a very talented and creative guy that's without question.
But to me his Flametal clip just sounds like Rock music.
I can't hear any Flamenco.
When I put on El Capullo and Diego Amaya, I hear Flamenco instantly.
When I put on Gerardo Nuñez, I can tell he is an ace Flamenco guitarist, and even in his "off the wall" creations, I can still hear that Flamenco sound, although I'm not crazy about his music.
But when I heard Ben's mp3, I just heard Rock music.

I tried to download Jason McGuire's videos, but couldn't get them to work. (?)

To be fair, I think there is no way that you are going to earn any kind of a living being an American "straight" flamenco player in the U.S.
So I wish Ben all the luck with his venture, but I would be lying if I said I found it exciting or stimulating in any sort of Flamenco way.

I suppose what was getting to me last night is the way the label Flamenco is used so freely these days.
Even if there is a rider on the cover saying that "this is not Flamenco".
Well why bother even bringing the word up in the first place?
I agree with Estela's statement that if everything is Flamenco then nothing is.
The word loses all of it's meaning.

You said it Ron. That's why we have guys like Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, Armik and many others. They do what they have to to make a living and I have total respect for that. They are also very good guitarists.

Ben's music if more Rock played on a flamenco guitar no? That will appeal to a younger generation and will probably do well for him. I've never heard anything like that before.

The thing that gets me is when you have an artist who peforms something totally different but says it IS flamenco yet they do not know how to play a Buleria, Alegria or any of the other toques. I cringe when I hear the word "flamenco" in their work somewhere.

I'm just a fan of the guitar though. Whether it's classical,flamenco,fusion,jazz,spanish-latin themed, or whatever, I love the instrument and if you can make a living plucking away at the nylon six-strings then you have my respect.

Ron,

I too had problems with the videos, but I waited quite some time and got them to download. The DSL versions are a lot better, but you being on dial up would have to wait a month for them.

If you can't get his videos, go to the "Store" link for MP3's from his CD. His stuff is bit over the top for me, but the guy can really play.
