A question for the luthers...

This afternoon I felt a ridge on the side of my guitar and I discoverd a crack on the side. here is a picture:

I dont know how it happend, but I left it in the sun this week (acidentally) and I let the kids play with it as well and they drop it sometimes [:)]

I have build it myself and I dont mind taking it appart if necessary, any tips would be welcome. It is the area of the waist and the crack is about 4 ince long.

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

Uh... that doesnt look good. On the side is much tension no? hmm..
A friend of mine once pulled his guitarbox on his back but forgot to lose it before. The guitar flew across the room and crashed on the floor. ...Very funny and painfull moment. It had a big crack, too. But a guitarbuilder repaired it so well. The sound is the same and you cant see where it cracked. Looks newer than before... If your guitar is expensive, dont worry, Im shure it can be fixed if you know the right guitarbuiler.

A crack like this often looks worse than it is to fix. Don't worry, you'll get it ok in an hour or two.

The critical thing is if the two sides of the crack line up when you close it with clamps. If it does the gluing is straight forward. Just massage glue into the crack with a finger and clamp. Wipe away the glue both on the outside and the inside.

When the glue is dry you reinforce the crack on the inside with small cleats going crossgrain the side.

If the crack doesn't line up there are techniques to help it but they are a little complicated to describe since you need to build some fixtures. There is information about this in some books: Guitar repair by Irving Sloane and The Acoustic Guitar by Don Teeter. If you are lucky you can find them in your library. If not contact me and I send some copies.

One of the best glues for cracks is the super thin cyano or superglue from Stewmac. (#10 ) That is if you can clamp it together with the two parts joining. Clamp it completely together and let the glue enter the crack. It penetrates everything. Repeat half an hour later. Next day you can scrape away the excess glue with a scraper and finish the side with a micromesh pad.

If you cant get the two parts totally together, you need to glue something behing.

In all circumstances, fix it soon. If not it´ll be more difficult because dirt enters and is difficult to get out.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, realy appreciate it.

For the picture I forced the crack a little bit so it would be visible, if I let go it just pops into place and is hardly visible.

Tomorrow I'll glue it together and patch the inside with some wood I kept after building this guitar. Dont like cracks in my guitars!

Thanks again,
Rob.
