Really stretching should only take place after the muscles and tenders are warm and there is a good supply of blood. Imagine playing with plasticene ( the childrens moddeling clay ), first you warm it in your hands and then when it is warm it gets more pliable and it will stretch and not snap. Now if you try and stretch it cold it will tear. There is a real danger to your muscles and tendons when stretching from cold. It is a good idea to warm up your hands before you play and you will know that they are warm because the will be red. Swinging them from the shoulder joint is good for this ( one arm at a time in a kind of windmill movement ) and if afterwards ( once youre hands are red ) you want to stretch then do so very gently. Yoga is much better for your body. I'm sorry to contradict, but I have had a lot of trouble with my hands over the years and stretching from cold does not help. I watched this whole video and was amazed by the childishness of his approach to improvisation. For him it is combining finger patterns to play lines which sound as fast and confusing as possible. What about being able to play the melody you hear in your head ? What about working on your ear by playing tunes by ear, harmonising tunes by ear, motivic development, keeping your place in a harmonic scheme.... MUSIC ?
