Anybody know what strings are used by the flamenco luminaries like PDL, etc? I once attended a Sabicas concert where the program said he was using la Bella (412, 850, 900) and Savarez Red Card (High Tension) bass strings, and I was pleased that I had settled on the same combination independently. String manufacturing technology has changed since then, (Nov. 19, 1967 Lisner Auditorium at GW University in Washington DC) and Sabicas might make a different choice today. I'm leaning toward d'Addario regular tension with the composite G now. I know, different guitars sound best with different strings (Sabicas was playing guitars by Juan Orozco, BTW. ) but still . . . inquiring minds want to know. Anybody know what strings other greats use(d)?

When I started guitar, I used La Bella flamenco red nylon. I managed to get the Juan Martin D'Addario flamenco strings (black nylon) which, and I quote from his book "definitely give a flamenco sound even to a dull sounding guitar". I swapped to Saverez red and later on Cristal. I used all these strings on my 26-year-old Manuel Condal - Barcelona (the headstock looks strangely the same as the Alhambras). I stayed with Augustine Blue for a very long time until I got hold of Luthier Blue, which do give that flamenco punch on my new Rafael Romero. Yes, even better than the Augustine Blue. I bought a set of Savarez Red recently and will retry them. PDL uses Luthier, I'm not sure which tension, Red or Blue. Here is the original back label of Luthier strings which I have kept over the years. You can't find this anymore, Paco probably objects to it. I believe they are made by the New York string maker Juan Orozco.

the Paco string is supposed to be the Luthier 30s "medium high" And theres also "Luthier 20" mediums with i big picture of Tomatito on the back. I´ve heard Tomate´s useing Hannabach anybody knows?

I get paid to use Ernie Ball 'Rock God' 12's...... which is probably why all my guitars snap in half[:D]

unfortunately every string which i tried until 2day..has its negative and positive properties. There is no brand from which i could say it has perfect properties in all aspects. Savaraz Corrum Alliance has the best sound for my Negra but that fresh sound is not for long and they die too fast! However...dont look what the maestros or other guitarits use. You have to try out strings in order to find the best solution for yourself.

In the old Days it was labella 820B or the red ones, and Savarez Red card used a lot. Pro's probably mixed up sets a lot. I have seen those wound G strings used in old vids. Tomatito I also heard used Hannabach, but now I see he is advertising Luthier. Nowadays Luthier is used by a lot of pros that used to use Labella or Savarez. Gerardo uses Luthier, but I have seen la bellas black trebs on his guitars too, just a few years ago. M. Sanlucar I have heard uses Giannini, a very hard tension set. I tried them, but the 6th breaks everytime. V. Amigo admits in interviews he always uses D'Addario medium tension. Ricardo

Bikhiyal is right about Savarez. I play right through the D string in 2 weeks -- the wire wrapping breaks over a fret and starts to unwind, and I have to change or start tearing up my fingers. I wonder if that is a generality -- the best sounding strings don't last long? Maybe the technology has improved and that is no longer the case (Savarez have been around a looong time). But I can say that having compared a bunch of different d'Addario types -- including those "EXP45" extended play silver on copper ones, the extended play were the deadest sounding from the beginning. Yes, they lasted longer, but they felt dead almost from the start. So maybe it just seemed longer. The d'Addario that stood up best to Sabicas' Savarez/LaBella combination was the composite set with the extra 3rd string, which has a more percussive snap -- not quite as snappy as the Savarez or LaBella wound 3rd, but a good percussive compromise between the mellow liquidity of the LaBella gold 3rd and the (to my mind) too raspy wound 3rd. But I'm talking about my own preferences, and that's off topic. What about Juan Serrano, Victor Monge, Nino Ricardo, etc. Anybody have old programs from their concerts? Quite often, they will mention what guitar and string makers the artist is playing.

Has anybody tried the Conde Hermanos flamenco strings? I saw them in Guitarra Buena in Amsterdam for €14.50, a lot more expensive than Luthier for €9. They have a good selection of CDs including the young Gerardo Nunez, Paco Serrano etc, all of Encuentro books.

Yes i tried the Conde Hermanos MT on my Negra and i wouldnt say that they are better than Luthier. Its maybe again the name CONDE which makes them a little bit more expensive[;)]

the only four types of strings that i used are: 1. la bella 2001 black trebles HT 2. Hannabach Flamenco 827 MT black 3. D'Addario pro arte normal tension 4. Augustine Blue Label i ordered them according to my favourtie, la bella was ma best choice, the basses sound great even the trebles, the problem of the d strings, cut off very fast. D'Addario is my second choice, they sounds great. Hannabach, good, but i was so disappointed with the sound of trebles, they were so dead. Augustine Blue, is not bad, but they died so fast, my best choice is la bella, and not keep them longer than one month, cause my country is so hot and humid, and i practice too much on them. what type of daddario that vicente amigo use? pro arte or what?

Anyone tried these strings? I'm waiting on a set to see how they go - http://cgi.ebay.com.au:80/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190102704437 The guy selling them seems to think they're the best thing he's found... I have similar ones (without the specialized basses) which are available from a different guy on eBay which certainly livened up my student guitar. I have also used the D'Addario composites that a_arnold mentioned, with the coffee-coloured G, which sounds a little 'stiff' to me but is easy to tune (for a G) once you get the hang of it. The basses seem to stay bright and clean for a long time too.
