andante -> RE: Anyone see Pitingo in London? (Mar. 8 2007 3:01:40)

I saw just three performances at the festival this year - Estrella Morente, Gerardo Nunez Quintet and Pitingo. I liked Pitingo the best. Nunez was incredible, but he is always incredible. He is so consistently good he is almost boring. I do not share Pitingo's enthusiasm for Soul, Funk, Gospel and all the rest of it, but I was quite fascinated to hear how he kept managing to throw it in. It was well polished, but in such a small venue it still felt spontaneous. I was sure I was watching a rising star - charismatic, great voice, good taste, rhythmically strong, and unlike Estrella Morente it seems that he can actually dance. As for how he went down, pretty well I thought. The crowd were baying for a second encore, but didn't get one. There was a middle aged American lady and two daughters within earshot, looked like they'd won the tickets in a raffle. As the lights came up they all sat looking at each other, not wanting to speak first. Eventually Daughter No 1 said "Well I liked it." No 2 said "Oh my God, I loved it!" Mother said "Oh wow! I thought it would be just me." The Spanish voices I heard on the way out - and there were many - were all saying good things too.
