Romanza -> Flamenco chewing gum (Feb. 21 2007 8:59:21)

Was going about my business this morning as usual, toast, cup of tea and GMTV while getting ready for work when was suddenly AMBUSHED by a double dose of flamenco during the adverts (Sorry about the GMTV thing - I do start with the BBC but they start repeating the same stuff after about half an hour and don't get me started on th presenters!!).

Anyway first up an advert for some Olay moisturisers (or Olay something) with a bit of zapateado and then a tantalising snippet of unmistakeable flamenco guitar - then straight away afterwards an advert for Wrigleys (or was it Orbit) featuring a small mustachioed man doing a nifty bit of rumba strumming!!

What is the world coming to??

ha ha.
Yeah I've seen that chewing gum ad!
Its only redeeming feature is the fact that there is that moustachioed man doing a bit of a rumba. Not a great bit of rumba though eh? more like stock spanish guitar or "Flamingo guitar"

I'll look out for that Olay ad and see if they have raped another on of our lovely toques.
Yes what is the world coming too? Flamenco for the masses?? I hope not. leave us alone advertisers!!

Sorry turned into a bit of a rant

Yes, Flamenco is becoming increasingly popular, and consequently its getting more mainstream attention. IMHO thats not such a bad thing though. I think PDL made a BRANDY commercial for Spanish TV a while back (its on Youtube somewhere), so I guess its only a matter of time before "flamenco-mania" crosses to our shores. It is a shame that PDL wasn't in the chewing-gum ad, but hey- if it guides "the masses" towards listening to some real Flamenco, then all is far from lost.

Yes, Wrigleys has, by far, the most duende of all the chewing gums.

True flamencos only eat everton mints, and of course liquorice.

Chewing gum is for the infidel.

What is it with chewing gum commercials these days? I don't know which ad I HATE more... the Flamenco-esque Wrigley's one or the Trident one where the geeks uncharacteristically speak with Jamaican accents. No wait... I do.

The "Olay" advert is actually an advert for "Dove Moisturizing Cream" and features a Farruca noticeably similar to Sabicas' "Punta Y Tacon" (at least for all of 20 seconds). But its reassuringly authentic.

I also saw the old beer commercial featuring the renegade Flamenco dancer just a few minutes ago.

Hey... Flamenco's on the up...
