I have a chance to buy a 1977 Gerundino (Almeria) in good (for a guitar that age) shape. I may not get a chance to play it before buying; on the other hand, the price seems to be good for a Gerundino. My question is this: Was Gerundino a mature luthier by 1977? I know he died recently and was certainly at the height of his career later in life. How about in 1977?

Any advice would be welcome.

hi, if this was the one owned by the late australian guitarist that was recently offered on ebay (also a 1977), be cautious. i saw a scammer reposting the same pictures on a hijacked ad after that guitar had already sold. if you contacted him through that ad, or vice versa, he does not have the guitar and is trying to take your money.

if this is a different scenario, i might also advise a little caution. i once played a 1977 cedar top gerundino that was among the very best flamencos i've played; and an early 80s, just a few years older, that was mediocre. gerundino was capable of building incredible guitars, but in my experience, was not as consistent as other great makers. i did own a 1998 of his that was quite good, but not to the level of the 77. any reputable seller should offer an approval/return policy, so you should request one. good luck!

I think Gerundino Build good guitars all his live, but ofcource some are very good and others are exelent.

My opinion is that the 70's and 80's were the golden years for Gerundino. It's always nice to play the guitar before you buy it but sometimes we don't have that luxury. Sometimes you have to be a risk taker.

The asked price is indeed 1000$ ? The seller is not a scammer ? And the guitar is in good condition ? And it's a true Gerundino (make a search in the old topics, you will read advices in identifying a Gerundino) ?
If it's yes for all these questions, go buy it NOW, before one well-informed guy grab it away from you... You can't go wrong, because even if the guitar is not so good, you will resell it with absolutely no loss in a wink of an eye (just try to put a genuine Gerundino at this price in the classifieds of this foro, you'll see...[:D]), and if you want probably with a very good margin...

Man, i don't want to bring you bad luck by anticipating, but if you get it, I suppose you'll make the "deal of the year"..

And if you don't want to buy it, like Gerundino63, I'm also INTERESTED..[:D]

Yes for sure, as hhmusic points it, first aswer correctly to the questions i've written down. It seems indeed too good to be true.

But ya know, i've seen a man in my town who bought an incredible Reyes from the late 70's at 1500€/2000$. No joke. Just that the seller didn't really know what he was selling..

Thanks, you guys. I was also suspicious at the price being so low. The guy wanted to deal outside ebay, which made me a little nervous (not that ebay gives any real protection), but I have emailed him saying I have a relative living near him (true) and that if he will deliver to the relative (who will inspect first) in exchange for a certified check, he has a deal. If he's a scammer he'll want the money up front and will probably not respond.

I'll keep you guys posted as to what develops, but I'm thinking he's the ebay scammer that hhmusic suspected.

I remember now, it was the Gerundino which sold legitimatly for 4200$ one month ago...the "shooting star" as we called it on the foro.

Okay. I owe all you guys -- esp. hhmusic a debt of gratitude. The guy I was communicating with WAS an ebay scam artist selling a Gerundino he didn't have. He was eager to consummate the sale and agreed to everything; he was willing to deliver the guitar, even, or give free shipping and packing -- AFTER he had the money. He wrote back to me with an immediate response every time I emailed him, offering the world at a discount, until I told him I had a musician/relative in London who would give him a certified check AFTER inspecting the instrument.
Haven't heard a peep from the guy since.
Thanks, guys. It WAS too good to be true. I feel like a real idiot for letting myself be tempted down that path.
