Anybody know of a source other than Luthier's Merchantile International for graphite neck reinforcement bars? I need to buy in quantity, and that is the only source I can find. I don't know whether LMI is competitive because I can't find any competitors!

I know you guys are probably all purists and wouldn't even consider using them, but I'm trying to help a luthier in Paracho shift from steel to graphite, which at least has the virtue of being as light as wood.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tony,

Don't know of any other US. sources for graphite. I've used carbon fiber with good success if your interested.

You can also use a strip of ebony or rosewood.

Look in the Yellow Pages or something local under Plastics or Composites. We have 3 or 4 places in San Diego I could probably find if you need....

And I used carbon in mine.. Works quite well, and is a LOT lighter.

Thanks SO much for your help. I didn't realize carbon fiber and graphite were different animals! Graphite (the mineral) is pure carbon, just like diamond but in a different atomic configuration, so I (wrongly, apparently) assumed they were the same thing. I guess geologists and luthiers speak different languages.

Yes, please, I would like some info on carbon fiber and its sources. Is it really lighter than the graphite? The Graphite that LMI sells is sandwiched together with epoxy, and I know that epoxy is relatively heavy.

Yes, if anyone knows the EXACT difference between "graphite epoxy" and "carbon fibre", please share it. I used graphite epoxy in my guitar, and it wasn't that heavy, but I didn't have any carbon fibre to compare it to.

Thanks for the reply. I'd LOVE to know about any sources for carbon fiber reinforcement rods in San Diego. Tallahasse has no resources like that. By the way, I think your email button in Foro Flamenco goes to an outdated email address. . . at lease, my attempt to email bounced.
