Eddie said, quote:
I've realized that Manolo really plays with a 'lot of balls' on this album. I've always said that Manolo Sanlucar found his balls with 'Tauromagia'. He has always been a very lyrical guitarist and has always shined when playing the 'toques libres' like Malagueñas, Rondeñas, etc., but I was never moved by the way he played the compás toques. In fact, there's a Bulerias on one of the volumes of 'Mundo y Formas' that doesn't have any chording compáses at all. That used to drive me crazy, because I couldn't figure out how it could be called a Bulerias. But his playing on 'Tauromagia' is incredible. It has become my favorite 'solo' Flamenco guitar album. However, I don't like the orchestration. I really think it hurts rather than helps the album, but that's his thing. He likes orchestration and his brother Jose Miguel is an orchestrator (is that the correct term?) On another thread we were talking about picado, so I'd like to bring up another technique -- tremolo. IMO, nobody has a tremolo like Manolo Sanlucar. Not PdL, Amigo, Nuñez, not nobody, no how. 'Oracion' is one of the most beautiful, moving guitar pieces ever recorded. BTW his brother, Isidro, was the musical director for Saura's 'Flamenco'. Phil
