Adam -> Nail help! (Feb. 5 2007 7:49:36)

So I've been playing classical and then flamenco guitar for a couple of years now, getting by on highly dubious nail practices. I'm realizing now that my nails haven't been growing nearly long enough (my m and a nails aren't even out past the fingertip, ugh!!), but I think they're a lot longer than they are because the white free edge is so long. I compared mine to my teacher's recently and his are certainly longer than mine but the white part looks so much shorter on his, which looks a lot less disorderly/unkempt/etc. So this is mostly an aesthetic question, since I have no problem growing my nails out a bit longer but there can be an issue with friends/girls/family/girls/etc. who don't know WHY my nails are so long...how do I make my nails more like my teachers? That is, longer (fine, I just let them grow :p) but with less white on the end, so that it isn't so glaring that my nails are really long?

Nails dont have to be long at all actually. Mine dont come past the
fingertip. I play flamenco and classical, and get a pretty good tone.

Keep them short. Its good for technique building[:)]

+1 on keeping the nails short. If they're too long, they break. I have the bad misfortune that my nails actually grow in layers as opposed to growing a strong solid nail. I've used everything without success. If that wasn't bad enough, when my nails break, which is often, it's waaaaayyyy down near the middle of the nail so I have no choice but to cut it or risk a painful accident. Having some nail is important but it's a misconception that it needs to be long.
