So lately I've run into a few boleros on some newly-acquired discs (Vicente, Val Ramos, Tomatito, etc.), and I rather liked them, but can't find too much information on what they are, how "flamenco" they are, etc. Would the lovely people here be able to give me any info? :)

Bolero and Estaban go together!

There is a ¾ time Bolero in Spanish dance and 2/4 4/4 which came from Cuba. None of them have anything to do with flamenco. The Bolero is not a flamenco palo – at least not as far as I know. But things change with time. Just ask Estaban! :)

If you like the music then enjoy playing and listening to it.

Thomas, I heard this on a few bona fide flamenco discs so I was curious, it's not like I'm listening to Esteban and calling it flamenco. Thanks for the answer but the condescension was unnecessary.

Some flamenco singers would sing "boleros" to a rhythm like Rumba or bulerias if they so chose. But the guitar versions you guys refer to are an attempt of the solo guitarists to be "jazzy" or "loungy" or "smooth" or "latin". Whatever you like. Nothing to "study" or bust your brain about.

I am sorry if you feel that my answer was condescending but that was not the intent. Again, if you enjoy the music then play it and listen to it.

By chance did you see the 1992 Australian movie “Strictly Ballroom”?

It is a fun movie to watch. Antonio Vargas (a well known flamenco dancer and teacher) is in the movie. The Bolero is one of the dances featured. If you have not seen the movie I think that you will enjoy it. It is one of the few movies that I can watch over and over.

By the way I like Esteban and others like him. They make a living at what they do and that is commendable.

Boleros aren't flamenco, but that doesn't mean they aren't great music.



Check out some of these. Esteban has nothing on real Boleros as I guess he has nothing on real flamenco either.
