Has anybody heard or tried using UV lights to give new spruce soudboards a nice aged appearance ? Does it work ?

Andrew

Hello AndrewE

By theory it works but the question is how long you have to leave your spruce under the UV spotlight until you have a tan and how much your electricity bill will raise due to this "excercise".

At the end it will not really make your soundboard better because the tanning will only be on the surface of the wood. A real seasoned piece of spruce will improve also its resonance qualities but this takes time. I don't think that there's really another method which could speed up the oxidation process of the resins.

We have UV-lights in the steril-benches in the institute! Its to kill bacteria to be shure to work steril... I could incubate my guitar there. Did somebody already made some tests?
