If it's a pop-flamenco thing then it'll be a nightmare. It depends on who they get to train the kids and who's promoting it.

If they get some great teachers and judges then it's a great thing. Anything to get the young people out there and known is good.

I'd be looking forward to the first castings with all the freaks who can't sing... [:D]

I guess it only means in the end that 16 young and already good "real" flamenco players will have even less money and support to go on their studying or pro career. And everyone knows how much andalucian jovenes need support to do flamenco. All the money wasted in this stupid initiative will never go to them, even if they deserves it a hundred times better than the "stars" they are trying to breed.

That's the less funny but "invisible" counter part of these initiatives. You can't see it unless some "insiders" come and talk about their problems. For most of the audience, this counter part does not even exists.

And tell me about the benefits for the audience ? Nada. Perhaps ten or twenty guy would like to make flamenco after, to become "stars" also. Seeing the truth- it requires years to acheive an "average" playing- they would probably quit.
And for afficionados and flamenco itself it will probably only be a shame.

I really can't think of a good reason explaining why they didn't choose to take already trained and good young players. Ah, yes...the audience score. There must be this "star from one day to another" process to tease people. They would think : "Hey, it can happen to me also". Like the lottery. It's now of no use working hard and be faithfull to your passion. You just need to won the lottery of life, obey your masters and be the "choosen one".

Yeah, I guess you might as well look for the next John Lennon on American Idol.

Actually this will be the 2nd Flamenco Idol. Here's the winner of the first:

"Ella es la luna, ella es la luna, sin ella muero..."

That's just stupid [&:]

Florian -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 19 2007 3:01:40)

lol u guys worry too much lol, so what ? big deal, and u never know, it might just be a good litlle promotion for flamenco, someone who watches the prog and likes it might just decide he/her would like to know more and look deeper.

ofcourse a young guy who dosent know is not gonna sing as well as a pro experienced singer in the peticullar genre whatever it is, blues, jazz, whatever

but the way u talk , is like u have to go to shaolin temple and leave as a flamenco monk, smoking and drinking all your life to be wordy. lol it is still music

who knows, u might find a new talent here, its certainly not bad for flamenco, i for one would love to watch it sounds like fun.

and they cant use people who allready sing flamenco because that defeats the purrpose of the show, "like can he do it "

John O. -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 19 2007 11:53:26)

Though I somehow agree with you Florian, Ottmar Liebert is just music too, and even in Spain his music is popular with possibly more album sales than an average flamenco guitarist and I'm sure many there think it's flamenco. Allow me to quote this dink:

"I play a Flamenco Guitar. I use many Flamenco Guitar techniques and rhythms, but I do not see myself as a Flamenco Guitarist. Flamenco is too small a world for me."

Hmm, a world he never got the hang of, his complex world seems to only consist of 4/4's [:D]

I think this is what people are afraid of.

Florian -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 19 2007 11:58:50)

if someone is stupid enough to watch otmar and stop at him and not look any deeper thinking thats it, to tell you the truth i dont want him onboard [:)] we allready got plenty of those not necesarely with otmar but with others[:D]

John O. -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 19 2007 12:34:00)

Geez, how long was I stuck on PDL before I discovered there was more...

I was on Tenerife last Summer goofing around playing soleáres and a group of young Spaniards came up to me and said "Damn, that's great! Play 'Entre Dos Mares'!" [8|]

Florian -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 19 2007 12:36:59)

yes but u looked deeper and just for the record beeing stuck on paco is no crime [;)]

Kate -> RE: Flamenco Idol????? (Jan. 26 2007 10:14:31)

quote:

ORIGINAL: romerito
What do you guys think of this. Singers who get trained and compete in an American Idol like show. These are people who know nothing of flamenco and get lessons in

The article says they are seeking out child prodigies and talented youngsters, so not exactly beginners then [&:]

We used to joke about a flamenco idol but really I think it is a good idea, great for promoting flamenco.

Kate
