John O. -> Question for Romerito (Jul. 26 2007 11:02:07)

Pulled up an old one here, hehe:

quote:

By the way, I have found that if you own the entire letra collection of antonio mairena and all the letras to camaron you will have a very large percentage of letras that are used today. Those guys were encyclopedic.

Where to get them?
The antonio mairena may be out of print. It goes back every once in awhile. Tje Junta Andalucia puts the title out. Check teh normal place like Flamenco World.
Any good biography of camaron will have his letras.

Would you by chance be talking about "Los Cantes de Antonio Mairena (Comentarios a su obra discográfica)" by Luis Soler Guevara & Ramón Soler Díaz?

@Doitsujin;

I think it's quite strange for a musician not to be sensitive for poetry.

As if solo guitar isn't poetry??

If you can't be touched/moved by some poems, I seriously doubt that a solo guitar piece can move you as well. And how will that affect your playing??
Of course it's a matter of taste and as the french say, "des goutes et des couleurs on ne discute pas". But I do think it's a shame for you cause there is a beautifull world you are missing.
I'm convinced that some letras, who first seem very shallow, if placed in the right context (as ricardo said) can be understood better and so get a whole new dimension.

I'm just discovering flamenco letras, and I like em very much cause they are different than a "book-poem". "Lacking social conventions what makes them more pure" as someone said here. (Ps. It's very frustrating not understanding enough spanish, altough my grand mother was spanish.)

What do you guys think of the El Molilo letras de pitingo?
*Que si el mar es tan azul
es de mirar tanto al cielo

....stuff like that....I like it, :-)
