I started playing guitar with Graf-Martinez's vol. 1 book and DVD... I think it's great.

FERGAL,

are you from ireland, if youre ever around limerick gimme a shout we could meet up?id say the graf martinez stuff as well as juan martins flamenco solos, im using both at the moment;

the oscar herrero series vol 1-3 are very good for for demonstrating technique as well, but vey little in the way of material, the techniques show are usually done using chromatic scales, which can be a bit boring.

as for stuff to listen to id say, start with cds by ramon montoya, nino ricardo, sabicas, and as for cante, id say terremto de jerez, remedios amaya and camaron de la isla;

Fergal,

Hemisphere Artists has a CD called Masters of Flamenco Guitar that is cheap (about 12usd), easy to find (here in the U.S.A.-not sure where you are) and excellent. It has 5 or 6 tracks each from Sabicas, Nino Ricardo, Manolo de Huelva, and Melchor de Marchena- four of the greatest and most important players in flamenco. For the price I can’t think of a better place for someone who is curious about flamenco to get started.

Definitely buy Song of the Outcasts, by Robin Totton - http://www.flamencon.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FC&Product_Code=610090&Category_Code=6A

I bought this at the recommendation of a friend.

This is an excellent bit or work that will give you accurate information and provide you with many fundamental things we all should know about flamenco.

I highly recommend it.

-Anthony
