TANúñez -> DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 14:02:18)

What the !@!@#!$ What's with the green tint? I've never heard of this. Doesn't look very nice. Why would anyone want a guitar with green tint? Maybe it's just me but not my cup of tea. Has anyone hear of this "flamenco lore" that is being described?

nhills -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 15:42:01)

The "flamenco lore" is from David George's "The Flamenco Guitar." He had a green guitar which some thought was a Santos Hernandez. In the book, he talks with Diego del Gastor about it and there is a photo of Diego playing it (unfortunately, it's not in color.)

Interesting book by the way - long interviews with Diego and Manuel Reyes.

Cheers,
Norman

Hi Norman,
A long time ago I seem to remember seeing a reference to a book called "The Gypsy with the Green Guitar".
It was on the advertising blurb of one of those "Adventure in Andalucia" travelogue type books...."If you enjoyed this book, then here are some other titles you may like".. sort of thing.

cheers

Ron

nhills -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 16:18:21)

Hi Ron!

Yes - that book is also mentioned as being by David George and is advertised as "available" in "The Flamenco Guitar."

I have hunted for it for years, but I'm not sure it was ever actually published. The last time I tried a worldwide library search, the only copy was in the Escorial in Sevilla (that might be the manscript.)

I own a Devoe negra, and would buy immediatly a blanca for 400 bucks or more, even with the greenish tint ! The guitar itself is probably worth the $$ but I agree this alien tint is rather unapealing, to be polite. If it's not a joke (the back pictures seems to have been touched, notice how the colors are saturated in the close shot) I wonder how Lester accepted/had the idea to make such a strange thing !!!

But who knows, perhaps it really gives the guitar that "hulk power" when playing rasgueado ?

Mmmm....! Knock out a few Irish tunes at Celtic football club's old age pensioner's charity dinner?

Hugh -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 20:49:50)

Now, come on Jim [:'(] Dont go suggesting that now.
Pretty soon they'll be wanting blue tinted guitars with RFC on the soundhole label[&:][:D]

This is a Glasgow thing, for you guys that may be a bit puzzled about these postings [:-]

No Joking! (I need a proper smiley with a green face)

Mark2 -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 21:50:04)

I was offered that guitar by Lester in the 80's for a lot less than 4k, but i already had some decent guitars-guess i should have bought it.

Doitsujin -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 21:52:28)

I think he got it for christmas from the grunch.

Did he tell you what the point of building it in the first place is?

legrec -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 22:58:38)

Yes please Mark, tell us... I didn't know Lester was such a facetious (or superstitious) guy...

Hey, is someone willing to bet if the green Devoe will sell ?
A part from a collector, I don't see how someone could buy this at 4000$...

Hugh -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 23:01:09)

Dont think they do such a smiley Jim [&:] At least I hope not [:'(][:D]

flamencoguru -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 5 2007 23:45:07)

No offense to Lester, but how could he bring himself to tinting it green???? If I had been the luthier, it would have been a cold day in hell before I put a green tint to a $5000 instrument.

Duende is also flamenco folklore but you don't see me dressing like a little elf or gnome when I perform.

Damn, that's probably the ugliest thing I've every seen.

Un saludo, Errol

Talking about weird guitars, what do you think of my personal favorite :

hhmusic -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 6 2007 0:32:22)

ya know, i usually like guitars simple and dislike any kind of frilly ornamentation, but for some reason i think the dancer, if she's only on the back, is kinda cool.

except, now that i look harder at it, it seems her skirt is two legs, with the left having a very big shoe. ok, that ruined it for me. back to simple. can't go wrong with that.

Yes, it's hard to bear such a dramatic change...
Look how it is made :

legrec -> RE: DeVoe for sale with Green tint???? (Jan. 6 2007 0:53:39)

And now the "face" :

On the whole, I like it a lot personaly. I will perhaps order one, but without any wood inlay on the sides. It gives it a very "dance accompagny" blanca taste...
(I must say that about the sound, a guitar from this luthier, Matthew Morello, had been evaluated as a "killer guitar" by one of my very thrustfull and knowledgeable flamenco-friend...).
