Arash -> When is a guitarist a good flamenco accompaniment guitarist ? (Dec. 21 2006 11:33:50)

When is a guitarist a good flamenco accompaniment guitarist?

I think that it is not only because of musical qualities and abilities but also the personality of the guitarist who is accompagning a Cantaor.

I think singers feel much more comfortable with guitar accompanist who "serves" them and get behind them and who respect and internalize that the singer is the leader and the guitar "only" the assistance. Even if they are great guitarists. They want them to play few nice short simple falsettas here and there and thats it.

I was in a bar here in germany where a Duo (spanish singer and a guitarist from Brazil) were performing.
The singer was singing and at the same time the guitarist was playing some fast scales. Somehow it didnt fit. Too much in my eyes. I mean the singer had a good voice and the guitarist was really good but the result was awful! What a pity![:@]

Thats maybe why some very good solo guitarist are not so good accompanists ?!
Because they always want to show what they can?!

What do you think?

I think its getting very specialized, you have guitarists who focuses on doing one thing like playing for dance and thats their specialty.

The reason it might not work between a singer and his accompanist could be many, different styles, bad guitarist/singer etc, etc.

The best perfomances is when you have a duo like camaron/tomatito, menese/melchor or fosforito/silveria who are used to each other and has been together for a long, long time.

And to answer how you get good at it, id say listen to it a lot, learn the progressions they do under the song, see which letras are frequently sung and learn these well. Then try to get hold of a singer or guitarist that teaches accompaniment.

The best is if you can learn things you like and to sing these verses yourself, but if that is too much then listen so much so you at least hear it in your head.

Dance classes with song helps a lot as well because they sing a bit more square and helps you understand the format better.

Then you play for as many different singers as possible and get experience and confidence.

And if you should play more or less depends really on the singer, most want it short others longer so thats individual, but its better to keep it short if you dont know the singer, he will signal if he wants more falsetas.

Just because the guitarist is humble or beneath the singer, does not mean the singer will like the guitarist. A singer will work with an arrogant show off gutiarist, if he does good accompaniment. Accompaniment has little to do with falsetas. It is about 1. Compas, and 2.Tonos. That is it. If you do good by the singer in those regards, you will be considered good accomp, no matter how crazy your falseta might be. Nino Jero does a lot of "show off" things in his falseta, banging the guitar, or sliding his had on the sound board ZIIIIP! That is a guitarist showing off a bit, but it does not take away from the fact that any singer would like him to back them up.

If you decide to play a 10 minute falseta, then you are not really accompanying. But nothing wrong with the length of a falseta. Depends on Context.

[:D] Yes, its better with a just as strong personality as the singer, who can deliver just as much power as the singer when its the guitarist turn. As long as he knows what he´s doing.
