Just curious.

I saw an instructional flamenco dvd from Aaron Gilmarin. ( an american )
Has anyone ever heard of him ?

I have seen a clip of his Dvd. I thought it was going to be like a "Mel Bay learn to play Flamenco Guitar!" But it seems pretty good.

Sorry to report, it gets three of those from me.

DavidT -> RE: Aaron Gilmarin (Dec. 20 2006 0:39:43)

I had his DVD's

It's good for beginners. Particularly he went into details of 12 count pattern. The part I like most is I feel like having a live teacher talking to you rather than reading off a script.

No instructional DVD is perfect for me. I always get some thing out of all the DVD's I have.

All I remember from this forum (I never saw the DVD or heard of this guy) was one student played a falseta from Paco (Almoraima) and it was the wrong compas, or it was changed from Paco's version, in an uncool way. The student was not at fault because it was as it is taught from this DVD. That did not bother me so much as the student was never made aware it was Paco's falseta.[8|] I vaguely remember an arguement regarding respecting Paco, following my comments, but I can't remember now.

So when I hear "aaron gilmartin" that is what i think of now.[:D]

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to watch it out of curiosity.

@ Jim: I don't understand your comment.

But what does it mean exactly ?

Sorry! Koella, when I re-read my post, I realised it's a bit obscure.

I missread and thought you were thinking of buying the DVD.
I didn't want to be outright crittical as it's someones attempt to make a teaching video and I guess there's been a fair level of investment went into making and promoting the DVD.
Having said that if los amigos are thinking of buying it, I'd have to say that it's not very good. I don't know who Aaron Gilmartin is, but I remember he comments he had taken lessons at some stage from Juan Serrano and it looks as if he playes other styles and flamenco is not his main thing.
Thing I remember is that he says things like 'we flamencos'
I was just dissapointed in that it would seem good to someone starting out to learn and as Ricardo mentioned, later on finding it's not quite right.

Thanks Jim.
His references are making film music and doing bossanova studio sessions. So it's not his main thing.

THAT WOULD BE ME RICARDO[:@][:@][:@]

i have gerhard graf's book aswell and it dos'nt mention paco came up with the falseta either, also he has one of tomatitos falsetas por bulerias and dos'nt mention that either.

being fair to aaron in the vid he does go on in length about paco's influence in the world of flamenco, and about nuevo flamenco;[8|]

Oh shoot, I did see that one, and he teaches it wrong too. It is not really "wrong" just not the correct rhythm that Paco does. Perhaps that is how they get away with teaching it and not giving credit?
