Because I love discussing nail care, counting bulerias and whether Juan Martin sucks or not, and I can't do that to the same extent anywhere else.

Hi Katrina, im not sure if everyone thinks this is the best guitar forum, metal heads wouldnt find much material here but for flamenco its really good. O.k i now i can ask a few questions, is Krause hungarian? i knew a krause and they were hungarian. Anyway that doesnt really matter i guess. What made you decide to do an essay on this place, does henry tell you about some of the heated discussions and it drew you in[:D]?

Its pretty good sometimes around here, it starts going off then it all calms down again. It comes in cycles, i think maybe its got something to do with the full moon (put that in the essay, thats pretty good material[:)]). Wheres henry been latley, i havent noticed much post from him lately.

fevictor -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 2:41:22)

What makes this place good is the willingness of everyone to help a fellow guitarist out, wether they are an absolute beginner or pro. Comedy relief is also a big factor!

kkrause1 -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 5:00:59)

Dominic, I am not sure if Krause is Hungarian or not. My family was from Germany, and there are other Krauses still in Germany. I choose this forum because I needed to find a community that I could observe and ask questions. The goal of the assignment is to learn more about a particular group of people. I choose this forum because my boyfriend Lionel (Shroomy726) plays flamenco. He makes me listen to it a lot and I thought it would be cool to find out more about it. Also, he said that everyone here was really nice and helpful. I am sorry I don't know who Henry is.

I wanted to thank everyone who responded. I also was wondering what people use this forum for the most?

Now thats cruel!

My apologies Katrina, i thought you new henry for some reason. Does lional make you listen to it a lot? it must be amusing at times. Good luck with your essay, this will be an interesting group of people to study.

Henry is a really cool Irishman. I can email him for you Dominic and tell him to get his e-Butt over here. Bu I think he's probably really busy with school right now.

Shroomy hasn't been meeting his quota of posts and uploads lately.

Frauline Krause:
This forum is different from other because of the narrow subject. Other guitar forums that discuss a broader range of guitar music will be quite different.

Here = Focused subject, small contributing comunity, small number of people picking the brains of the contributers and an unknown percentage of lurkers (ask Escribano)

Elsewhere = broad subject, unfocused posting, larger community of contributers, vast random info-seekers, forum denizens, trolls and lurkers.

Ricardo -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 7:42:15)

Other "guitar" forums usually revolve around a band or specific guitarist, and of course their peers in their respective genre. The ones I have visited anyway. For example on the Al dimeola forum, paco's name comes up occasionally, but not Morao, or Marchena, etc. And on Paco's forum, Al's name is briefly mentioned, but you will hear more about flamenco players.

So in that sense THIS forum is pretty broad in the sense it covers an entire genre of players and a long history. But as has been mention, the other 2/3 important parts of flamenco CANTE and BAILE, come up occasionally, but this is certainly a forum where the focus is Flamenco Guitar. But honestly I don't consider that such a "narrow" topic.

Ricardo

This is mainly a guitar forum. The cuadro-"block"(4 components) gets little airtime here. There are mostly english speaking non spaniards on this forum. Why dancers and singers don't weigh in is beyond me but it is hard enough to get along with all the guitatists here. Can you imagine adding dancers to the mix. The fourth component is so small it's ghostlike. The Palmeros are never heard here. Probably because the singers and dancers do double duty to fill out the cuadro.

Don't forget tha cajon and castanet players!!! [:@] I can see them lurking in the shadows...

Jb

PS: whats that about there being lots of Krauts in Germany? [:D]

Exitao -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 11:58:24)

I wasn't criticising and narrowness doesn't preclude the profound. When I say 'narrow' you have to keep it in perspective.

This is a genre-based forum and as genres go, Flamenco is hardly one of the most popular (and this is clearly because the mass of humanity is either uneducated, uncultured, or just plain stoopid).

If we were to look at blues forums, or rock forums, or jazz forums you will see a much greater range of topics and discussion. Especially as these genres have become 'globalised.' Any one of these genres have more internationally known (past or current) greats, even by people from outside of the genre. How many people pop in here and ask about Ottmar and yet have no clue who Sabicas or Tomatito are?

But as guitar-oriented forums go, this one is definitely unique in that discussion of baile and cante are received with interest (as would palmas and cajones).

Romanza -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 14:46:52)

Lots of flamenco artists employ castanets verdad??, listen to a Paco Pena sevillanas or what about PDLs La Nina de Puerto Oscura (or is that footwork)?

Exitao -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 15:39:26)

They use castanuelas in sevillans, a lot. I think that particular combination is why I don't like sevillanas.

Then again, sevillanas aren't flamenco, are they? But I'm sure PDL and others do sevillanas ocassionally.

kkrause1 -> RE: foro flamenco (Nov. 16 2006 16:14:05)

Thanks for all the info guys. When I said that Lionel "makes me listen to it" I didn't mean that in a bad way. He just listens to it a lot and we live together, so its kind of hard to avoid. I like flamenco. I just don't know a whole lot about it. Thats part of the reason why I choose this forum as a topic for my paper. I wanted to learn.[;)]

You can blame Carmen Amaya, since she used them for everything, including Siguiriyas and Solea.

I come here because its a forum forum for flamenco nerds and im a nerd when it comes to flamenco. So there is a basic mutual understanding even if it get a bit heated sometimes.

Its also vitalizing to see other peoples approach and to learn and to see things from another angle than your own.
