Romanza -> On Olé (Nov. 14 2006 16:44:24)

Just thought i would lighten the mood a little with an Olé survey - which is your favorite and least favourite??

Some of my favourite Ole's in flamenco recordings are:

1) At the beginning of Tomatito's Ah te quedas (Paseo de los Castanos) the whole ensemble seem to be falling about laughing and talking and there are several good humoured Olé's. Someone translated this on the PDL forum and apparently they are talking about beef stew or something, as you do..

2) In the middle of Palenque on Live One Summer Night when it goes to some sort of 'bridge section' and Pepe does some magnificient cante, someone in the audience practically roars Olé' - you can tell he is really feeling it!

Then I think some of the scariest Olé's are in Vicente's La Tarde es Caremelo which I think is a beautiful song with divine vocals from El Cigala, but MY GOD the Ole's over the guitar music sound like the devil himself! Not sure if it is Vicente or what but it sounds weird!!!

There are some good "Ayyy!" and "Allllley!" shouts in Carmen Amaya's "La Reina Embruja Gitano" CD. I'm not sure if its Carmen herself complimenting the guitarist (Sabicas, I think), or other members of the audience complimenting them both. But it all sounds quite passionate, without being in a scary OTT way.
