Romanza -> sevillanas question (Nov. 4 2006 14:50:36)

hi all, a simple question (i think!) - is sevillanas copla section normally played with thumb or with the fingers? can it be played with either?

There's no rule. I play a bunch of simple falsetas with my thumb, and my friend plays the same ones with his fingers.

I will opt for the way that I can drive the rhythm the hardest, if I am the only guitarist. Sometimes it is thumb, sometimes fingers, depending on the melody. I may put the melody in the lower octave if I want to play with the thumb, and vice versa, I will but the melody on the treble strings if I want to play picado. Or you can do the first two times pulgar, then the last time Picado,etc, lot of options.

Thumb:
E-----------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------0-2-3-2-0-----0-----------
A-------0-------0-2-3-2-3---------------3------3-2-0-
E-0-0------4----------------------------------------------

Picado
E------------------------------0-1-0--------------------
B-----------------0-1-0-1-3---------3-1-3-1-0-------
G--------2-1-2--------------------------------------2---
D-2-2----------------------------------------------------
A--------0-------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the replies. i tend to switch around too although my instinct seems to be to play with thumb as i find it easier.
