Morao Y Oro, the sheet music, arrived by post earlier in the week but I only had a quick peek before my wife hid it away. Looks great! Very clear transcriptions plus some info on the Jerez style and on Moraito's technique. Can't wait to have a play. ..and I'm also getting Saura's 'Flamenco' film at long last. Can't wait to crack open a bottle of wine and watch that too (note to UK people who haven't got this - we managed to get it for £9.99 in MVC.) What are you guys getting for christmas that you know about? (flamenco stuff, I'm not interested in your new socks...[:D]) Jon

Hi Jon Well, we celebrate here in Holland also an other feast, saint Nicolas,on the 5th of december, with precents too, christmas is celebrated not so very big, but too with gifts, and lucky me, my birthday is december 2, so I feel like a sjeik! I get a stringwinder, to make chancing your strings a lot easyer. A big musicbook standard, I give lessons, and the light standards are dropping down very easily, and my brother in law, who is here on the forum Paco E, Ed, gave me a very nice guitar cd, 'the 5 great guitars" it is a very nice dutch production, with all duch guitarists, exept one who is african. So, don't wake me up this winter! greetings, Peter.

My beloved and I are getting shiny new plane tickets to spain! I have never been to madrid but I'm going now!!! i have a CD of a night at a club called "los gabrieles" called ''martes flamencos'' and i wanted to go there. Anybody been there? it looks amazing beacause the walls are covered in painted ceramic tiles. It's a hard life eh what?

Jon, You will really like the Mora Y Oro book. I find it very rewarding, but a challenge as well. The problem I have is he must be able to stretch half way up the neck. My old decrepit hands have a tough time. I am enjoying it because I can actually play the stuff (somewhat), but am being pushed to a higher level. The intro that I did on the third Group Solea was from this book (Bronce). It sounds easy to play until you try it (at least for me). Pat

For Christmas...well we just moved into a new house and I probably won't get any flamenco thing. I had the option of either getting a Yamaha flamenco gig guitar or a nice leather jacket from Brooks Brothers... sorry, fop that I am, I decided to convert my old guitar to a gig guitar and get the nice jacket!

Jon. Got my big present a couple of weeks early. Not purely flamenco, but it's a Goodmans "Jukebox". This dalek looking machine will stack and play 20 CD's without refill (that's an awful lot of flamenco(-:) It's also a tape to tape dub and player, has FM stereo radio and I can connect my turntable to it. All in all (once the family have disappeared with all their Christmas day party stuff) it's wall to wall flamenco....ole! (((-: Jim.

John you are really going to enjoy this Morao and Oro stuff. I asked a friend to buy for me the collection of 15 dvds of Jondo y Puro but it was imposible to get them. I´ll have to try next time when I go to Spain. I´ll go next month to Jerez for 9 days , I will take classes for a week there that will be my flamenco present for myself. Melchor

Still haven't decided on my present to myself. I've got eveything I could want materially. Wish I could buy some compas[:D] Maybe, I'll save my pennies for a trip to Spain in the New Year. Then again, I am sure I can find a gadget to fill the stocking.

Simon, I maybe know how you feel. I've certainly got everything I want. Last week was my Christmas all in one when Jim (Opfer) came up with all his guitars and CD's (which I am still rationing myself to!) As I've said, Jim sold me his Bernal guitar, which I'm still getting to know. It's still a bit strange to the touch after my old guitar I've had for 15 years. But as the Pope said to Louis Armstrong on his World Tour (including Italy). "I hear you are now Married....Haff you any of the childrens yet?" Louis said, "Well, not at the moment your Holiness....but it's sure is good fun tryin'!" At which the Pope burst into laughter. cheers Ron

Santa has been and gone as well. I just got a 1983 Ramirez Negra. The history of this guitar started with Eddie and his teacher Juan Serrano. Eddie sold it to Dimitri from the old FT site about three years ago. To be honest I have not been a great fan of negra’s. Everything I play is kind of hard edge, in your face type of stuff, that suite a blanca. Anyway, Dimitri has been telling me I should try out this negra. I certainly trust his judgment when he says it’s a good guitar. After all, the guy has owned most every guitar known to man! LOL He said the only two negra’s he really felt that sounded flamenco are this guitar and Eddie’s A25 Conde. We cut a deal and he sent it to me. I got it Saturday so I haven’t had a lot of time with it, but I am telling you this is a very unusual guitar, at least to me anyway. When I first played it, I wasn’t too impressed…kind of flat, so I put some Corum’s on it, which helped somewhat. The next day I did a mediocre recording of it and sent it to Dimitri. He basically said, “What have you done to my beautiful guitar, please send it back”! In my mind I was playing it like I play my blanca’s, just have at it, and what comes out comes out. Dimitri said I needed to back way off and take it easy with it. He said this guitar is totally backwards. If you want it louder, play it softer. If you want more hard edge tone, play it lighter, not harder. Now I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t make any sense to my old warn out brain, but here’s the upshot to the story. Last night I pulled it out and played it like Dimitri said. After about twenty minutes I had a big grin on my face, just shaking my head. Here I am hardly playing this thing and it’s louder then my Shelton blanca that will blow you out of the place. The secrets to this guitar as Dimitri said are “attack angles”. A slight adjustment of attack completely changes the tone. You can almost mold the tone with very subtle attack angles. I still can’t get the low E the way I want it, but I think I will get it in a day or two. Sorry to ramble. Has anyone run across this with a guitar or have I just been in the dark? You don’t need to answer that! Pat

Patrick, sounds like a great christmas present with your new guitar. But... I thought that obtaining projection on ALL guitars was much more a matter of angles (technique) than the inefficient application of brute force. That's how I make my Carillo project, but I haven't really played enough guitars to say that it works for all of them! What do you think?

Miguel, I am sure you are correct, especially in regard to negra's. The only reference points I have are my blanca's and maybe another ten or so higher end guitars. My experience has been the opposite with blanca's. If you want more volume, just play harder. If you want more edge, just lay into it. Maybe that's why I have had a hard time embracing most negra's. One thing I do believe is a negra can help us become better guitarist. With a negra, you can't just force your way through the music; you have to become much more in tune to the instrument.
