Ricardo -> RE: BEST PERFORMANCE OF A PARTICULAR PALO (Oct. 26 2006 22:13:58)

Just guitar solo obviously, OK.

Alegrias-Paco de Lucia La barrosa/Tomatito La Ardila (in D).
Bulerias (por medio)-Tomatito/Moraito
Bulerias (minor)- Sabicas/Paco
Bulerias (other keys)- Nunez "jucal" "trafalgar", etc./Manolo Sanlucar Tercio de Vara
Solea por bulerias-Nunez-trad. and weird tunnings./Manolo Sanlucar De capote
Solea-Chicuelo/Vicente (1st album)
Siguiriyas-Nino Ricardo/Nunez (low B tuning)
Rondena- Manolo Sanlucar/Paco (live nino curro)
Granaina-Ramon Montoya/Nino Ricardo
Taranta-Vicente Amigo/Melchor de Marchena
Fandango-Paco de lucia any one of them/Vicente
Classicalish waltz flamenco stuff honourable mention-Escudero Impetu and Esteban de Sanlucar any of his classics.
All other palos for guitar solo-Paco de lucia plus one of these guys. My time is up.

Ricardo

Mark2 -> RE: BEST PERFORMANCE OF A PARTICULAR PALO (Oct. 26 2006 23:09:57)

Tarrantos-PdL Fuente also Vicente
Bulerias-PdL y Tomatito-take yer pick
Solea-PdL
Alegrias- uh, pdl and Bola

Really I could pick Paco and Vicente for all, but there's so many greats.
I have to admit, I really don't get all the Moraito stuff-I like how he plays for singers but not as much as PdL and others with more chops, or for that matter, with less. I'd rather watch Nino Jero play. I think M is "Hip to like" because of his background, but his solo album is only so so to me. I realize the Jerez singers love his playing but wonder how much of that is simply connection to them and how much is raw playing ability...... He is nowhere near Tomatito or Paco or Vicente to my ears. Ricardo, what about his playing stands out to you?

I have to break the rules. I say PDL for 1/2, and VA other 1/2.

I agree about Moraito. Didn't think much of him till I saw him live. He's one of those you have to experience in person to appreciate I guess. But really, he changed the way I look at guitar.

Moraito epitomizes flamenco

With you so far, and an approachable guy with a big Jerezano thumb.

You know I am ending up with El Capullo on vocals and Moraito on guitar, now I have a dancer in mind but haven't decided on palmas or cajon and who needs poncy fretless bass, really?

My dad used to wear a black cowboy hat just like that!

MORAITO- Not the best soloist or anything, but man when he accompanies especially bulerias, it is an AMAZING grooove. Nothing fancy but really in the "sweet spot", in the Pocket. To accompany you need no more or no less. The maestros of the guitar who do fancier things are certainly more interesting to listen to for guitar fans, and not inferior for sure as accompanyists, but like I said, no more or no less is required. Perfect taste. Check out El Angel Vid where you see Camaron do the same ol stuff you know that he does with Paco and Tomatito, but check out that simple groove Morao has going on. And he has a simple blue print for accompanying that works for ALL the different singers.

Compare his way with tomatito also accompanying Zambo. Half compases are obvious difference, but overall they both have their own way of doing it, though both are in the "jerez" style.

There is more to guitar than only accompaniment, but he is pretty much perfect for cante. Another great of accomp. is Paco Cepero. Same thing, always knows the right style and feel, but for solo playing he is OK. Juan Habichuela too. It is just what they focus on.

For the record, I HATE when aficionados right off great players as "solista". GRRRR! There is room for many accompaniment styles. I have heard several others accomp. as good as Moraito with the right taste. An under rated accompanyist is Gerardo Nunez. Another not so famous but GREAT accompanyist is Manolo Franco.

Ricardo

Mark2 -> RE: BEST PERFORMANCE OF A PARTICULAR PALO (Oct. 27 2006 5:10:28)

Thanks guys, for your insights. I need to listen to him more. Cepero I really like, there's an energy and sound there that is part of his era that I really like. The Habichuelas are really heavy guys. I love that kind of playing. I saw them in the "flamenco puro" show that toured the states in the 80's. Fernanda, Chocolate, Farruco, his daughters, etc. The Amadors. Bola was a kid of 15 or so. It was an amazing show.

BEST (NON PACO NON VICENTE) PERFORMANCE should be the new name for this thread.

Manolo Franco - Seguiryas and he had a great Solea por Bulerias not on his album in a video buried somewhere among my video tapes.

Jeronimo - Minera when he was a kid (some of the same falsetas Viejin plays)

El Bola had some nice Alegrias and Bulerias i recall.

Juan Diego has some nice stuff and early Jose Antonio Rodriguez the latest is good too.

And i almost forgot my hero Manuel Silveria is incredible (i love him) and Paquete Montoyita, Jose Luis Rodriguez and Paco Arriaga are all good.

You probably heard of all of them already anyway.

Aah, and the Soleá 'Al Maestro Antonio Rojas' with Daniel Casares
