Ron.M -> A Scottish Meet! (Nov. 30 2003 18:50:33)

Hi Folks,
Jim Opfer came up to see me this afternoon bringing with him four lovely guitars and a bunch of CD's.
Let me tell you this was like cool water to a man wandering around in the desert!
Jim is an exceptionally nice guy and a very talented player.
Jim's recordings do not do him justice.
Hearing him play "live" was a feast for the ears!
He has a certain way of drawing out the tone of the guitar and an enviable right hand technique, very relaxed and positive.
When I was in the kitchen making the tea and listening to his playing drift through, I could definitely have been in Spain.
He had with him a Ramirez 1a Blanca, a Bernal Blanca, a Bellido Negra and a Stephen Hill Negra.
The Stephen Hill was definitely one of the finest guitars I've ever tried.
Certainly in the class of guitars I've tried from lucky meetings with Paco Peña, Ramon de Algeciras, Rafael and other excellent professionals.
Happily, Jim sold me his Bernal, which I like very much and looking forward to getting to know.
I had been thinking of selling my Ramirez 1975 Student model (Blanca) but Jim made it sound so good in his hands that I'm having second thoughts now!
A great afternoon!

cheers

Ron

Now you are one of the Bernal family, though I guess Jim isn't anymore [;)] A good solid guitar and well respected. You'll get on well with it I am sure.

Stephen Hill's guitars are excellent, I got some luthiery advice and bought my Bernal from him, small world eh? Have fun with your new baby (guess you're not going to Spain for one now, right?).

Ron,
It was a real pleasure to visit yesterday afternoon, you are exactly the man I know from reading your posts; kind, wise and at heart, a true flamenco.
Your Buleria is a joy to hear and I understand your love for that illusive 'Jerez' I know it's not just the 'sound' I guess it's the DNA you're after.
I came away feeling I'd been on a pilgrimage and left feeling a lot better for it.
I'm glad you have the Bernal, she's still young but none the less a great guitar and now she has a great home, yes Ron, another Lady!
Cheers
Jim.
