Well, I'm thinking of getting a new guitar, after having tried one out today, this Cort CEC5. It sounds pretty great, and plays really well, and is on sale for $300, normally 340. I think this is as much as I can afford in a few months.

It had a very sharp sound which isn't so much sweet sharp flamenco sounding as much as it seems to be from the fresh strings. Maybe it still has more flamenco style sound compared to the classical guitar I've been using for flamenco in the last year.

This forum has a thread discussing a low-cost flamenco guitar, the Yamaha CG 171-SF and maybe I should save for this one instead. But I like built-in pickups and cutaways for the extra range and I like playing flamenco and classical guitar songs on one guitar, so it's a hard decision.

In truth, I haven't ever played an actual flamenco guitar, but playing flamenco falsetas on a classical guitar is easy once practiced and mastered, and it sounds great to anyone who just wants to hear the music ([:)]without virtuosos around ) so that works in my budget's favour...
heh heh.

Anyone have constructive comments or suggestions? [:)]

As far as I know, the Yamaha CG171SF no longer exists. It has been replaced by the CGFL1. I couldn't even find the 171SF on the yamaha website anymore. The CGFL1 is listed on the yamaha website as a handmade guitar, but I have my doubts. I suspect it is the same guitar as the 171SF, just "relaunched". I'm told it is a similar price too.

The Yamahas are suitable for Flamenco, but also flexible enough to play a bit of classical stuff on. That said, there is no longer a Yamaha Flamenco guitar with a cutaway (I think there used to be). Perhaps because cutaways aren't used that often in Flamenco playing. You could probably get a Yamaha for less than $300

If the Cort is your only choice, then that is what you should buy. I think Neil Zaza plays a cort (not a Flamenco guitarist, but a shredder). Be aware that the guitar will probably not sound very Flamenco. But thats okay if you're not really serious about Flamenco, and just want something to play on.

Your info is great! I'll do some research on the yamaha guitar.

By the way, I think you're probably right, where the cort guitar may not sound like flamenco. But oddly enough, the way my ears and mind interpret the instrumental portion of music is different because the first full length complex classical guitar song I learned was learned on a steel string electric guitar with an amp. yep. Finger picking, etc. Also I learned my first sevillanas and farruca and soleares on the electric too, and a bunch of the technique, tremolo, rasgueado... So the cort is probably just fine for me to do flamenco forms [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif] hehe.

Well, that is quite unconventional. Although occasionally, I do play Flamenco on my Strat just because I'm too lazy to take the Yamaha out of its case. But its much better to learn on a real acoustic guitar. Actually I think theres a guy called Uli Jon Roth who plays classical songs like Recuerdos De La Alhambra on the electric guitar... sounds weird!
