MKodji -> opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 4:14:52)

Hi all,

If you guys had $20,000 and wanted to buy one flamenco guitar... What would it be?

even though this sounds ficticious, I am willing to spend up to $20K for a nice flamenco.

Any thoughts are appreciated???

Mike

Escribano -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 4:33:17)

I would spend $2500 and it would be a long, long time before I was better than that guitar, if ever. The rest on a couple of years in Spain, taking lessons.

Ricardo -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 5:06:55)

Yamaha CG171. Oh, and a Conde too.

Miguel de Maria -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 8:11:02)

For that kind of cash, I think it would have to be an antique like a Santos Hernandez that Sabicas played.

duende -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 8:25:39)

I would have Anders build me another guitar and then find some "super" brand Flamenco guitar Like Conde or the one vicente plays whats his name? the Luthier?

Or why not find some hot flamenco guitar shops and buy an airplane ticket.
Go to spain, pick one out.

John O. -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 11:05:40)

I'd make a deal with a great builder to check out my playing style, listen to the sound I like to get out of a guitar and hand make one especially for me. If I don't like it, he should try again until he gets it perfect. for $20.000 he should give it a few tries. I'd of course be able to keep them all once he gets it right.

MKodji -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 16:07:56)

There is a 93 Manuel Reyes flamenco blanca in spain for $16K. I would say add another $2K for shipping/insurance and duties. That would cost me $18K overall. Assuming the seller is willing to give me a trial period, would you guys pay $18K for a Reyes?

Doitsujin -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 16:53:07)

I would spend the money to people who really need it.

Like me. You get my bank accout data via PM. [;)]

John O. -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 17:52:37)

Aside from the fact that it's a Reyes it would depend on whether it was perfect for me. Of course the name means highest quality no doubt, but rather 2000 on the guitar perfect for me than 20000 for just the name...

I've decided I'm actually with Doit on this one. We'll split it [:)]

TANúñez -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 18:20:55)

This is just MY opinion but I personally can't see paying 20K for a guitar. What can you do with a 20K guitar that you can't do with a great 5K guitar. Other than brag. Even a nice 3K guitar would be fine. For 20K, I think all your getting is a name. Reyes, Hernandez, Barbero? All great instruments but for 20K?

For 20K, I would personally go to Spain, visit several shops, talk to many luthiers, try and play as many guitars as I could and come back with the right one. Don't know where your at but if your in the US., go visit Lester DeVoe or Aaron Green. That perfect guitar may be in your own backyard and you wouldn't have to leave the country to find it.

Are you a collector? If you are, I can justify paying that much for a very special guitar to add to your collection. If you were to buy a Berbaro or Hernandez for 20K, how much would you actually play it?

JBASHORUN -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 18:53:26)

Buy a 5k Conde Hermanos, then spend the other 15k on liquor and cheap hookers! [;)][:D]

Jb

PS: mind you, with 15k, they don't even have to be "cheap" hookers!

Now that's what I'm talkin' bout.

Ron.M -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 19:53:11)

Forget the guitar....how much would you pay to have a fantastic technique, Flamenco sound and great compás? [:D][:D]

cheers

Ron

Guys, guys,

All I am asking is whether you would pay $18K for a Reyes Padre. I appreciate all the comments and advises but please let's not deviate from the subject.

Thanks,

Mike

Miguel de Maria -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 21:27:59)

Mike, I think this is the wrong forum--not many of us here are spending that much cash on guitars. I do know that Richard Jernigan, who posts on the e-borneo classical guitar site, is extremely knowledgeable about flamenco guitars and might be able to help you. Google classical guitar forum and just go there.

Mark2 -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 21:36:12)

I would never pay 20k for a flamenco, but for a flamenca, maybe 5'6" 120lbs of beauty, grace, and compas, 20k is a bargain.

Mark2 -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 21:39:34)

Oh, sorry for being a deviant, er, I mean deviating from the subject. For 20k, only a Santos would do.

MKodji -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 21:52:11)

Thank you Miguel for your honest opinion.

Mike

MKodji, your orignal question was if you had 20k and wanted to buy one flamenco guitar, which one would it be?

Ricardo -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 22:42:45)

What was the topic again? Oh yeah, I changed my mind. I would buy a Smallman, Ramanillos or Hauser, or whatever I could afford for only 20k, then put a black tap plate on it and play really crazy hard flamenco on it. At the end of the show I would lite it on fire and smash it into smouldering chunks on the tablao stage (careful not to hurt anyone of course). And make sure it got filmed so I could put it on Youtube and post the link at some classical guitar site. Man what a feeling it would be....where is the devil horns emoticon?

MKodji -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 18 2006 22:48:10)

TANunez,

Even the answer to my original question should not be " to spend money on 5'6'' 120lb ....in spain...".

My point was I don't need advise on life or trips. There are plenty of travel agents who can help me with that ... I would have hoped to get responses on guitars ONLY.

But I had some ideas, and I am very thankfull for that.

Mike

tk -> RE: opinion needed - if you had... (Oct. 19 2006 0:11:49)

Hi Mike,

let me tell you my honest opinion. First thought, I would say $20K is too high for a Reyes but if I think about the current Reyes Market, I can say it is not very unreasonable but it is high. Recently Chris Kamen sold an 87 Reyes (classicguitar.com) for around $14K. He was asking $14.5K initially. So, a 93 should be around $16-$17K assuming same condition. If you decide to pay $18K -$20k, just know that you are paying a premium of $2K-$3K for now. Maybe in 5 years, the prices for Reyes would be around $25K who knows. But keep in mind that he is a legendery builder after Barbero and if you have the money, what the heck.....You play a nice guitar for a loooooooong time.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

p.s. Note that a new Reyes from his shop is around 13,000 Euro which translates to $16,500 US. But what are the chances of receiving one from him directly if you were not on his list 10 years ago? I will let you do the Math...

TK

Thanks TK for your opinion. I do see your point and somehow agree with it.

Very valuable.

Mike

Your absolutely right! It should be 5'10" or taller. Women with legs that could wrap around you twice! [8D]
