Crows -> Anyone listened to....??? (Oct. 17 2006 19:25:59)

Well sometimes I just can't believe how few of the new releases are discussed on here these days.....but still people find time to pan JM.

Has anyone listened to/have any points of view on:

Tomatito/Camilo - Spain Again
Argentina - Argentina
Nino Josele - Paz
Jose Manuel Leon - Sirimusa

Well, I have to be negative to start with, I think that the Argentina sucks big time. No matter who is playing guitar on it. Predicatable cajon patterns, semi-tone vocal range,nasty backing vocals, elevator Flamenco dressed up as crossover with attitude. I don't like this one.

Tomatitos jazz chops astound me every time I hear them, and it's a good CD, some real nice interplay. But, I think it sounds just too academic for it's own good when listened to alongside the Nino Josele. Josele swings for real and also relays the Evans classicism at the same time. Great tone as well...nails,wood,nylon...lovely :-)

I'm not sure what to make of Sirimusa yet. Something in me thinks that it is attempting to move forward, but I have another feeling that it's a bit lazy and aimless....what do you think? Please help me out of my dilemma!

Oh...one more that I had forgotten about, or was I saving the best until last? It's not as recent - Nano de Jerez 'Alrreo de la Fragua'. Beautiful, beautiful, one for all the reactionaries out there :-)

Andy.

I have my Nano CD autographed. The other albums I feel exactly the same as you said. Leon, new but aimless, Tomatito nice if you like that piazolla stuff (I do). Nino Josele is good, but I am not a big fan of Evens. Only Kind of Blue stuff, meditation music, I like. Good music for learning how to play changes though, becuase it is all over the place chart wise, and he likes waltz.

I'm sort of ambiguous with regards to Sirimusa. Leon's an astounding player, but the album is like he's trying to do too much at once. I would have liked it better if he had left more space and saved some of the dazzling technical passages for his next cd. No doubt he'll record more as he's quite young. (cue heaving of large sigh as he's a couple of year's younger than me).

Argentina is good. I saw her in a pena show once and was really impressed. I like her voice because she's got that husky edge which keeps her from being a Nina Pastori clone. Plus the list of guitarists on her album are the best young players from Jerez. I don't own her album yet but it's on my list of what to buy next.

No opinion on Tomatito/Camilo or Josele's albums yet.

-Jake.
