Mark2 -> Yeeeeeeeeeeouch!!!!!!!!!! (Sep. 21 2006 21:14:18)

So I finish loading my van yesterday and all of a sudden my index and middle finger get slammed in the door. Thought I broke my left index finger(i play left handed) as the nail went black right away. It was so painful I didn't sleep all night-just iced it. I called the clinic at five this morning and they said come in at 11:00. The doc takes an x ray and says it's not broken. So I ask why it hurts so much. He says the blood under the nail is causing pressure on the nail and is the source of the pain. He can burn a hole in the nail, bleed it, and release the pressure. It will just hurt a little for a second. Given the pain I'm in, I say go for it. It took him three times with this hot iron thingy to burn through the nail and it hurt like hell each time. Screaming hurting pain, as I smell the nail burning. Then he forces the blood out through the hole. Yeooooow! Felt better right away. Got a gig in a month-nail should grow out by then. Dodged a bullet.

This happened to me last year. It was my kitchen sliding door, very old and heavy. I pulled my middle finger right through with the door as it was closing. But luckily, it was my left hand. Doctor said the blood was too dry to poke a hole by the time I made it to the ER. So it remained painful and swelled up, but the extreme pain eventually subsided. It was the most I ever felt I think. Anyway, after a while the nail fell off completely from the nail bed, and took 4 months to grow back. And now for some reason, the "quick" of the nail is longer than it was once.

God forbid it was my right hand. I'm sorry to hear about this, man.

Conrad
