I've just received a very fine guitar that I bought from Chris Kamen at Classical Guitar and just wanted to report that the whole transaction went very smoothly (Santa Barbara to Glasgow, all by e-mail) and that Chris was great to deal with.

i can vouch for chris as well. he's always been a good guy to deal with, and is my favorite of the big dealers. his prices are lower than GSI and The Guitar Salon (in NYC). perhaps a bit higher on some guitars than Dan Zeff, but he's good about listening to offers and i find him to be very fair. (besides, it seems that all guitar prices are going through the roof these days, and that even the 'discount dealers' like Zavaleta's have become expensive - at least if you're buying in dollars!)

regarding manuel bellido, i don't think i would agree with chris on that. i've owned guitars by both makers, and have played others. bellidos are very good, but not quite on the level of reyes, in responsiveness, playability or tone. but that's just my experience. maybe the reyes guitars i've owned/played have just been particularly good. i will say that the only person who knows reyes guitars better than chris is reyes himself. he's owned many personally, and sold several times that through his shop.

Hi nealf,

I had a very nice Motrero y Bellido negra 1968 and sold it a few years ago. I went to meet Manuel at his home in Granada 4 years ago and found him to be working away in an old ramblibng workshop (Not in the Shop). He was intrigued that I had the 68 guitar as this was the one year in which both he and Marin Montero worked together and shared a label. Manuel offerred to sell me a negra which he brought out from inside an old victorian period wardrobe. This was the sister guitar to one made for Tomatito, with coral wood back and sides. She was very nice indeed but I was looking for a blanca and decided not to take her.
I have to say that Reyes is very special, quality of sound and playability (which are fantastic) to one side, the workmanship is exquisite and very very fine. The rosette is made from the smallest ever block pieces I've seen and the bridge is just so delicate.
Bellido guitars are very good but Reyes are just special in every way.

Jim.

Jim,

It is indeed a beautiful Reyes. Probably a dream guitar to own! How much did you pay for it (If I may of course)?

Sorry! TK, the money is meaningless and a matter that's between Chris Kamen and I.

Jim,

Totally understandable. No need to "Sorry". I just wanted to get an idea for future references.

Thanks anyway.

Don't Tommy, it's bad for your health!

No problem TK [:)]

Value's a funny thing. If I had paid £1k more than I did, she wouldn't be any better a guitar and if that had been £1k less, she wouldn't be any the poorer.

As RonM wisely asks, 'does an expensive guitar make anyone play better?'
probably not.
