henrym3483 -> flamenco school or just lessons? (Jul. 28 2006 17:51:55)

right people, im in the process of applying for funds to the arts council to fund my trip to spain. ive been looking at the cristina heeren foundation and it looks like a solid school but some of my friends think its a bit too much and i should just dip my foot before going for a swim ie do some courses etc

who here has studied over there for a long period of time, was it of benefit and what way did you continue your guitar education?..schools, one to one teaching, parties etc.?

gracias

henry

hmm.. I think all the new flamenco-guitar-shools are redundant. Why paying a lot of money if you can take free lessons in dance-shools? If you wanna learn some specific stuff. Take one two private lessons from a guitarrist whose style you like. If you go to a flamenco-guitar-shool you have to learn what they tell you. And than you play the stuff which 1000nerds fiddle too. No chance to get your unique direction, which is most important. And I they do so much blablabla and tell theoretical thinks which you really dont need. Just some thoughts.

i would rather go to a school for a year.

why?

You will get friends to play and hangout with.
If you don´t speak Spanish its also very nice to have an environment where you go everyday to study.

Also it might be hard to get inside a flamenco family.
At a school you get to study technique accompaniment for baile and cante.

I would go to a school without question.

Your not getting molded into a certain typ of playing just because you go to a school. Learn what ever makes them happy. If your intelligent and a just a little creative you learn what they make you do
But when you get the point you toss it in the bin and do YOUR thing.
Every artists has copyed the greats before them to learnt the trade.
you´ll find that playing what everybody else has played is a great school of learning the art/language

I went to the Fundacion, but only for a month during an intensive summer course. I enjoyed it very much. Not only did I learn a lot of Spanish, a good bit of flamenco history, I also learned a bunch of falsetas, got some technical help, and met a lot of good players. At night, I went to the Cafe Sol, the Fundacion's teacher's tablao. During my 6 weeks in Spain, I saw over 20 shows total.

I think it's a good thing, because structure is very helpful for most people. Again, I was only there a month, so how much can I say? I think it's a lot better than taking your guitar to the park and trying to get lessons from the guy playing there, or even going to Jerez and taking private lessons from the Carbonero. Here you will be placed in an environment where everyone is trying to learn, with other musicians most of whom will be better than you, and with a variety of teachers with different approaches.

The point is really to get a foundation, not to learn particular falsetas. That's the work of a mature musician, choosing which music he wants to play, not a beginner.
