Gecko -> Blanca v Negra v Palos (Jul. 27 2006 11:30:21)

Over the past year or so I have watched numerous DVD's, mostly the instructional type, where the players switch back and forth from a blanca to a negra and vise versa for different pieces. So I have been wondering if there is a traditionof playing certain palos with a blanca and certain other palos with a negra.? Or is it just how the player feels about a piece and the way he/she wants it to sound?

If you saw concerts. It could be that they play palos with different alterated tunings. If you tune some strings much down you have not the time to wait till it dont change alone. So they use a guitar for different tunings and one for normal tunings.
All the concerts of paco I saw, he only used negras and didnt change it during the concert.
Negras and blancas have complete different characters. Negras are more serious profundo..dont know words for this. And blancas have more the ..I would call it "spritz-sound".

Hey Gecko,

I noticed that too. Especially in the JM Solos Flamencos. I eventually came to the conclusion that it was done based on the aire of the toque. He used his blancas for the livelly palos and the Negra for the somber ones.

Now, ask me which toques are lively and which somber [8|] .... no clue. I feel alegrias, fandangos and granainas as lively, and tarantas, mineras as somber. Not sure about the rest at all though.
