There's Amir John Haddad who has a solo CD out. I think he is half Arabic, half Spanish (but don't quote me on that). The CD is pretty good:

Anyway, what does it matter where a guitarist is from, as long as he knows how to play?

He's all that from what I hear. He just played a concert in Madrid that Ricardo and others went to. Maybe when he returns he will give us the details, Nick

You should drop this guy a line:

he's a flamenco percussionist, also plays oud, flutes..he's into greek, turkish, and arabic music as well. I'm sure he would know some people ot point you to. He's also the guy who recorded my CD, but don't hold that against him :)

There's also some guy called Behzad who has numerous albums out. I own one called "Strings of Desire":

Its a bit of a mix of Arabic influence and Flamenco... although that sort of stuff often comes under the Noveau-Flamenco catagory.

Mike,
That guy's web site is cool! I love his variety. It sure would be cool to have the time to get into lots of different instruments. Every time I hear someone good on another instrument, I want to play it. The problem is, just like with Flamenco, one has to really get into the basis of what really makes the music feel the way it does. I'm sure the oud would not sound very Arabic if I played it. I need to stick with Flamenco for now. Oh, I do have a Chinese violin(Erhu) I really want to learn too.

Rod,
Eric cracks me up..every time I go over there, he has a new instrument. His latest things are Bulgarian music and thumb pianos. In fact, he left two days ago and is now at a music camp in Bulgaria! And when that is done, he's going over to Sevilla for the Bienal. Ah, the benefits of being single...

His whole apartment is lined with shelves of instruments, which he can play to varying degrees. He does keep his music very organized by country.

Ricardo -> RE: arabic guitarists?? (Aug. 4 2006 16:13:32)

Yeah I met Amir in Madrid. He, Ramin and myself hung out all night in the big plaza and jammed. Really great player, lot of feeling and clean sound, cool ideas. He is Palestinian/Columbian, born and raised in Germany. He considers himself more German I guess than anything, but speaking English to him he seemed very American. I lived in USA with his American girlfriend for awhile I think. Very cool dude anyway.
