Well I had to do a private party last night, I had now Idea what it was about.
They heard of me through a local music store that gets me lots of referals and gigs students ect: I soon found that this was a birthday party for a 91 year old man named Merill Matzinger who studied from Ramon Montoya. There where many people there who had played in younger years, most of them where in there late 60s and 70s.
I also met a man, Robert who studied from Sabicas himself, he said that Sabicas always played guitar and if he wasn't he was at the race track or playing cards.
He said Sabicas turned to rubber without his guitar and would just sit in the corner.
This party was very inspiring and emotional none the less. I was excepted with warm arms and every one asked who I have studied from, Mariano Manzella, Humberto Sales and Chuscales of course.
I wanted to share this story, for me it's a lot of work to try and play Flamenco and keep it in a responsible interpretation. I talked to Robert (sorry forgot his last name), after the show and he said hes to old to realy play anymore but he was very kind and said we can hang out soon and talk Flamenco and he's going to give me some old recordings of Sabicas and Ramon Montoya and teach me what ever he can.
As you can guess I am very excited about this, to meet someone who has lived in spain and is willing to share what he knows with me.
I feel that I have the tools for the next level but it's hard without the right teacher.
I wish I could study from people like Ricardo or Todd even though he is a --- well lets just say that Todd realy got me thinking and I wish I knew where to begin to get to this next level.
I'm saving to go to spain next. But until then I hope this Robert will be as good as everyone says, he touched my guitar and strummed it for a second and said it was a beautiful box, but he seemed to be in pain, so I didn't persit.
Everyone at the party said Robert was a monster on the guitar, all you have to do is give him some gin and a guitar and he will play for you.
So I can't wait to hear of more of his stories and learn more about Flamenco.
Which is what Flamenco is all about, finding God through music instead of angels and Religion.
One more concert next week, and I will have time to post more.
