this video is awesome. Paco is strumming a rumba for this guy to jam on. The guy's sound is totally 70's and not sounding that great. Just a bunch of licks. Then Paco comes on and does this ridiculous scale run/lick. And the crowd goes crazy! A cool moment...

Ron.M -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 8 2006 20:18:21)

Well Larry is wearing bigger flares than Paco, so he's definitely got him beat there IMO.

How come non-Flamenco guitarists think it's "muy Spanish" and "muy Flamenco" to repeat, over and over again, the same 3 or 4 notes as quickly as possible?
You never really hear that in Flamenco..
Where do these guy's get that idea from?

cheers

Ron

Surely, that's John McLaughlin in drag? The same Ovation guitar by the look of it and PDL blows him away yet again[;)] I love the bum starts to his riffs that he just starts over again. Hey, in 4/4 and no-one counting, you can get away with it, right? But listen to the crowd when PDL hits the groove. What a difference.

I also detest that up and down fast pick/plectrum stuff which doubles every note, thereby sounding "faster" but going nowhere musically.

duende -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 8 2006 22:15:24)

I never liked Larry Corryel.
Never liked paco playing this stuff either.
Got this on DVD. (thanx Jim)[:)]

In my opinion all the artists involved in this prodject
is much better on their own doing their thing. Al,John, Larry AND Paco.

ToddK -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 8 2006 22:51:25)

Ok, sorry to be a sourpuss, but Larry Corryell really is just
completely horrible.

That lead he does in the video, is just, well, really sad.

He had to have been extremely embarrased just to be there.

Im embarrased for him, just watching it. Ay ay ay, painful.[:'(]

This is one of the big reasons why plectrums have a bad rep.

I agree. Coryell is pathetic through out this whole concert. Actually the concert alone is extremely boring. Especially the second tune called "Lotus Feet" where Paco plays only C major and E minor accompaniment for about four minutes, while Mclaughlin plays solo over it. Probably the most challenging tune he ever had to play......

OK, I don't want to pile on, but LC looked really bad. I agree, it was totally just ****ing on the guitar. You could almost make an instruction video of "how not to play a solo" and then "how to make a cool solo" here. And apparently this guy is a semi-famous guitar master?

Is it just a matter of him being out of his element and not really having a chance to look good? I mean if you made me improvise on Indian ragas I don't think I would be able to come up with anything either...

ToddK -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 9 2006 4:43:35)

I have to disagree. Larry was quite studied at that point, and
quite famous.
There's no excuse for the bad solo. All he has to do is stay
in E minor for God's sakes!

He just doesnt have "it".... Actually, not even half of "it"...[8D]

He thought he would be able to hang in there with some half ass'd E minor repeating triplets, and some other bullcrap. Boy was he wrong.

The right thing for him to do in that situation would have been to
avoid it altogether. He simply doesnt belong there, period.

Sorry Larry!

I have another video of Coryell from 1991, where he plays with Di Meola and Bireli and he is like a school boy compared to Alberto. He is extremely sloppy, it seems like playing with pick isn't his profession.... It's weird, if you consider a fact, that he's been doing it all his life. Even a very young Bireli, who was 24 at the time, blows him away.

I'm not really sure why is he so famous, but he is considered as a father of jazz/rock fusion among guitarists. He is one of Di Meola's idols[sm=rolleyes.gif]

And yes, Larry was already quite famous in 1979.

ToddK -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 9 2006 10:54:36)

I saw Larry and Bireli years ago, at Blues Alley in D.C.

Again, i dont even understand why Larry even showed up to the gig.

Bireli tore his head off on the first tune. Larry who???[:D]

Ricardo -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 9 2006 14:34:46)

I loved it, every note. I love guitar duets. Larry was a pioneer of jazz rock fusion. He influenced guys like Dimeola in a big way. McLaughlin and Dimeola have better technique, but there you have the "chops vs feel" arguement. Is Paco a better improviser because he has better technique and plays well rehearsed falsetas? (that is what people cheered for, not his improvised melodies). I think anyone should be nervous sitting next to Paco, playing a song that Al dimeola composed. Paco took it at a really slow speed for him, but still they were not together in the beggining. Larry obviously just learned the tune. Plus the guy looks really high on drugs. I think Paco would be a little upset about everyone ragging on Larry, his friend. But this is a flamenco forum so go on and bash the poor guy just because he is not as good as the other guys. His hair, clothes, glasses, guitar tone at least deserve to be made fun of. His inferior playing ability is the iceing on the "HE SUCKS" cake.

Anyway, this dvd has some great camera shots of Paco's picado technique and left hand technique. Not sure what was the big struggle paco had playing with these guys, seems like he always had his act together.

I guess my thing is, I don't get it. If there is a player who is famous and I don't understand it, I assume that there is a lack of knowledge on my part. I saw this clip and of course I loved Paco doing his thing, his amazing focus and dignity, but LC just seemed really bad. I also don't understand Dimeola or McLaughlin at all. I have to assume it's just a lack of knowledge on my part of what they're attempting, but to my ears it is not pleasant at all...

Ricardo -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 9 2006 20:06:09)

Mclaughlin is great, very advanced. The stuff can be pretty, or very deep, or go right over your head and sound damn boring. I like his playing with Shakti the best. Here is a vid from fairly recent. He improvises on the indian raga, but it is not random scales. The rhythm is the clue to what he is doing. They have a long phrase of 10 beats I think, and all the speedy stuff leads up to the down beat. And the trade offs with the percussionists are really intense. Watch from 5:00 to see the rhythmic interplay. At 6:40 he takes off with some really hard melodic patterns really fast. I mean, to me it is not just a bunch of fast notes it is really interesting and advanced.

Dimeola has some good things to I will try to dig something up.

duende -> RE: people love paco (Jul. 9 2006 20:55:39)

Being a jazz guitarist before going flamenco i can say that i like Mclaughlin and de miola as fusion players.
I just don´t like the Trio in any setting.

A lot of times people disslike music just cause they don´t know a genre or style of music enough. Sometimes you have to know what is "good" or not so good in a genre to be able to tell if it´s good or bad.
