hey guys, new to the group

i was wondering if anyone can give me any feedback on mexican rosewood aka "palo escrito"...how does it compare to brazilian or indian rosewood? im on the market for a negra, and since i live in LA, i went to art valdez, and he said he builds his negras with palo escrito, a wood i was unfamilar with until i spoke with him. so any feedback? thanks guys!

Hi jrabbani

Palo escrito is a true dalbegia rosewood native to mexico. It's the nr. one tonewood used by mexican luthiers of Paracho. You may also find some comments about this tonewood on lmii.com

Palo escrito is lighter than most other dalbergias and it has attractive grain patterns. Tonewise it is very resonant, but due to the lower density it produces less sustain than indian or brazilian rosewood. Therefore i believe that is is a great tonewood for flamenca negras.

Palo escrito is also less expencive than first choice indian or madagascar rosewood.

I hope this helps.

thanks armando, quite informative!

Hi

I´ve made a Negra with Palo Escrito, and it turned out very nice. nice response. The looks of the wood is something personal. I find it to be dull, but the sound characteristics are very nice. Nice taptone and the lower density makes for a lively response. the guitar I build had very nice singing trebles.
I will build with it again. But since I get Indian Rosewood cheaper than Palo Escrito, it´s my first choice for Negras

anders, how would you compare it to indian and brazilian? as far as sound and response is concerned. i really dont care for the aesthetic qualities juxtaposed to the response of the wood(s).

thanks

oh yea, anders, check out the fine wood work on my pantoja in my profile, im sure you would appreciate its unique design. more importantly, she has a sweet, warm tone

I'm finishing up a negra with Palo Escrito. I like the aesthetics of this wood. I hear they make good negras so I'll soon be finding out.

Hola all,

Tomas....nice wood. Is that they Reyes you are building? Or with a blanca, too?

I noticed the reinforcement strip goes almost all the way? Do you trim later for the heel block, or?

Luis Sevillano uses this wood a lot, and he's like 1/2 hour away from me across the border, so I may go grab something from him (given that I build again!). That way, I can steal something nice from my buddy! [:D]

Almost done with Binding Hell....will post photos later in Flamenco 9!

Saludos

R

Jrabbani

Well, if I have to compare with Indian and Brazilean, I would say it´s different[:D]

It´s lighter and less dense and makes for a lighter more singy negra, less serious, less dark, both in tonal and visual aspects, but I only build one[;)]
