This thought comes from discussion under Merle's post 'help please'
When I play picado phrases up the neck somewhere, I prefer to do this under a Barre, i.e. Barr the fret and play the run with 2,3 + 4, I know that lots of players prefer to play runs a bit like a jazz player, using all the fingers and just going note to note and string to string. I have no formal training and find this just totally confusing, I need to know where I am and the Barre gives me an anchor point.
What do you do?

I certainly don't play that way. There is a phrase in Panaderos Flamencos, which I'm sadly trying to learn, which has a simple picado under the barre and I find it very difficult. Definitely a good technique to know, I'm sure.

When you play, do you know what notes you're playing, or do you do it more by shape?

in some places a barre can slow you down and can muffle some notes eg: a scale run on the 7th fret. If u keep practicing modes slowly and open i think it will comy in very handy.


I designed some exercises for myself for this:

1: Firstly i found each note in each key (Taranto, Alegria, Buleria, Solea, ) thats most of commonly used ones.

2: I than made scales sequences in each mode, starting from open fret to about fret 12.

3: I started practicing this slowly up and down

4: Now to keep it exciting I use Solo compass cd and do it to different palos.

I would be happy to provide a tab of what i mean if u guys wanna see.

I use both barred chords and shaped chords even in the same piece of music. It really depends upon what is required. Off the top of my head I am thinking of several falsetas I play for Farruca, that use this approach. There are many more.

I do know the name of the notes but do not think of such things while I play. I just know where I have to be. I use this same approach in playing classical music and other forms such as Peruvian music, which uses the neck of the guitar from end to end! When I get past the tenth fret I do not use barred chords. For me the notes produced are not clear above that point.

Something to be aware of with barred chords and doing finger changes with the left hand at the same time for picado. There is a greater risk of injury then if you use fixed barred chords or shaped chords (no bar). I know many players from here and Spain who have injured themselves overdoing this technique. Such injuries can prevent you from playing guitar and other activities.

If you practice scales and chords in all available positions that you can play well (some are not easy and should be avoided) in different keys you will be amazed at what you will be able to do! Start with one key and add one at a time.
