Unlocking the Art of Flamenco

Summer Intercultural Institute II: Unlocking the Art of Flamenco
Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual, director

Faculty: Gonzalo Grau, cajon, keyboards, cello
Sara Erde, flamenco dance
Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual, flamenco guitar
Sunday, July 9, 2:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Monday July 10 - Friday, July 14, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 15, 2:00 - 10:00 pm.

This intensive seven-day workshop will focus on developing familiarity and proficiency in the core flamenco rhythmic/song forms of soleares, siguiriyas, alegrias, bulerias, tangos and rumba. All participants will enter the repertoire through intensive practice of rhythmic clapping (palmas), and singing, which may then be transferred to a student's particular instrument. All students will get a basic introduction to flamenco dancing as well, while some more experienced flamenco dance students may choose to learn and perform choreography in one of the festive rhythmic forms. Experienced guitarists will be guided in the accompaniment of singing and dancing, and all interested students will also receive an introduction to percussion techniques. In addition to the hands-on practice of music and dance, a portion of each daily session will focus on aspects of the history and culture of flamenco. Through a combination of lecture, analysis, guided listening/viewing, and performance of music and dance, students will leave this workshop with a broad understanding of the current state of flamenco, its tradition, and its cultural context, including explorations of current developments in flamenco through jazz, contemporary dance and flamenco piano. On the final evening of the workshop, students will participate in an informal public performance with faculty and guests in a festive environment of music, dance and food.

The classes are demanding, but prior experience with flamenco music and proficiency on an instrument are not expected or required.
