Gecko -> "Ideal" Saddle and Fret Crown Height??? (May 1 2006 10:37:24)

I have completed the fingerboard wedge on my old negra. However, before I do the final sanding and glue the fingerboard back on there are a couple of questions I have, principally for Anders, Pablo orAaron, or anyone else who may know the answers.

1. What is the “ideal” height for a saddle. In other words how much saddle should “ideally” be sticking out above the saddle slot?

2. What is the crown height for the fret wire you guys use?

3. What is the “standard” action height at the 12th fret? In other words when you guys build a flamenco what action height do you initially set it to, providing it has not been specified by the buyer.

Thanks

Hi Gecko

Good questions. Easy to answer[:D].

1) Does not exist. Depends on the bridge height. I like my guitars to have a 7mm high bridge and 1,5mm saddle above the bridge.

2) I use 2 of Stew macs fretwire One which is a bit more than 1mm high and another one which is a little higher.

3) 6th string: 3mm and 1st string 2,5mm. I can go lower if the player wants it, but this is a good standard setup, where you wont get much buzzing if you know how to control a flamenco guitar.

Thanks Anders. I appreciate the info. Wow, 1,5 saddle above bridge!! I was estimating about 4mm or 2/16". I may now have to sand the fingerboard itself down a little and re-cut fret slots (their off a little anyway and the fingerboard will need leveling). I can't sand the wedge much more as its 0 mm at the nut and I would have to start sanding into the neck in that area. Should be no big problem as the fingerboard is 6mm thick, just more sanding, sigh.

Take it easy.

A 6mm bridge and a 2,5mm will work very well as well.

A tip. When I put a long straight edge on the top of the fingerboard before fretting (The straightedge goes all the way down to the bridge, I want to have around 2mm between the straightedge and the soundboard. This give me the angle I want on my guitars and the stringheight above the soundboard that I like. (Some 8mm)
