metalhead -> Appreciating the cante Jondo (Jan. 31 2026 14:43:53)

After 3 years of playing, I can finally say I have fallen in love with the cante Jondo. It took me a while, but it happened. I can now very much see the appeal which previously, I failed to do so. I have gotten so used to it, that I can't actually listen to any soft singers anymore. Ricardo's earlier comments about a singer pretending to sing nice, also made sense. Singers like Jose Menese and Chocolate, that I never thought I'd appreciate, I finally look forward to listening to.

During coved foro member Morionte (rip) sent me a cd of I needed for my studies but added this José Millán cd.

I used to play along but in the last year I’ve been digging the cante as much as the guitar work.

And ya, I don’t like that soft whatever you call it, I’m not a fan of Jazzminco at all, I don’t even like the later PDL stuff… Ducks flying empty manzanilla bottles ;)

I few years ago my ex mentioned somthing less then polite about the cante and I knew we were done

Cruel.
I totally understand most people who can't do anything with cante jondo.

I compare it with offering some poor tourist icelandig fermented shark or korean live baby octopus to eat and expect them to immediately enjoy it. Not gonne happen. It's too potent.

You need to ease them into it with some cheesy jazzmingo first, then some fried nuevo flamenco, after that fermented cante chico, then maaaaybe they can start the cante jondo journey.

And after the celebration, then despair at the death of cante!

For you Ricardo, here's a living cantaora, Fandangos por solea.

Ay oscura y sin tener luz
yo estaba malita en la cama
oscura madre mía y sin tener luz
entraste y me dio alegría
y recobré yo mi salud
que por ese hombre malo la tenía yo perdid

(I just posted another of Paqui Ríos in 'this week's cante' thread.)

Thanks. Enrique Almendro style is not the typical or traditional ones they would do but still more interesting than the freestyle versions.

Don't forget Juan Talega

Still, I like her libre. I believe her when she sings. Chaparro de Málaga is great, playing so strong but somehow not over-powering the cante, rather adding to its power, in my opinion.
