Mark2 -> guitar issues (Jan. 20 2026 19:30:42)

I've got a guitar that has one of the pegs slipping. I can't seem to get it to stick. Can I just buy a random set, replace just the one, or do I need a specific type/size? Also the guitar is french polished and the finish is doing something weird in a few spots. It's a good quality handmade guitar. I'm thinking of selling it. I need the space....

Have you contacted Ethan?

You could PM him on here.

ernandez R -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 20 2026 20:51:40)

Pegs need a luither tune up every once in a while.

Doubt you need a new peg.

And because Ethan is a regular here on the Foro I’ll let him have his say before I add my two cents.

That's weird, there were a bunch of replies that have disappeared.

I can attest to that.

Me too. I went to great lengths to give a helpful reply and now it's gone.

The forum needs a serious plan. This kind of slow painful death with all sorts of issues (long term members not being able to log back, new members can't join since July 2025, posts deleted, etc.) is kind of a twilight zone with no future. I am sure people would still help out in whatever ways (financial or otherwise) to keep it running, but it needs some decisions and a future plan with possible migration, etc. I mean come on it is 2026. We should be able to somehow fix this together?

Ricardo -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 23 2026 11:47:04)

That was odd. Seems there must have been a back up restore that happened. I have noticed that there have not been a bunch of spam bots like there had been in a long time now.

constructordeguitarras -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 23 2026 14:54:07)

Okay, here goes again.
Mark, I'm sorry you're having trouble with Pegheds. You have the two E strings wound the wrong way. Changing that may solve your problem. Otherwise, you may have loosened one of them and they need to be screwed and glued in, and wound the right way to keep them in. Please see the photo below for instructions on what to do after you unscrew it all the way and take it out of the headstock.
Regarding the shellac: I think that is due to wax in the shellac. Now I remove it by centrifugation to prevent that from happening. Not much can be done about it other than refinishing the guitar, which I don't recommend. Best wishes.

Thanks Ethan! I've never owned a guitar with pegs until recently when I had Jason McGuire build me one. I was wondering why he had the strings wound the way he did :-) I'm left handed so I'm unable to play the guitar you built. I've kept it for friends to play but at this point I need the space. Glad to hear the finish issue is just cosmetic. FWIW my friend showed your guitar to Antonio Rey and he liked it. He made some positive comments about the sound.

orsonw -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 23 2026 18:53:01)

If there isn't a guitar luthier familiar with pegs/mechanical pegs nearby, you could try a violin/classical luthier. I have had my real peg, and mechanical peghead guitars fixed by one, they are experts in pegs.

Mark2 -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 24 2026 18:08:07)

Haha, it’s amazing the things you don’t know until you do. 40 years ago I bought a Ramirez 1a Blanca and just switched the strings around. I still have it and it’s a great guitar. Play it regularly. I picked up a Yamaha 171 when they came out. Figured it might be a camping trip guitar. Turns out I don’t really like camping. But no issues switching the strings around. But not so with Ethan’s guitar. Turns out like a lot of builders he carves relief in the neck so when you switch the strings they don’t line up in the middle of the neck. The bigger issue is that lefties simply don’t have access to many guitars, so we don’t learn about the peculiarities of various instruments. That’s how I went forty plus years without learning how to wind the strings on a guitar with pegs. I’d imagine if I played right handed I’d have owned many more guitars by now, and played and messed with hundreds instead of a dozen or so. Lefties always gripe about the limited selection but what is overlooked is the lack of general knowledge about guitars that goes along with it. But no one ever asks to borrow them so there’s that.

When Antonio Rey saw my Devoe he reached out in delight wanting to try it. When he saw how it was stringed the disappointment on his face was instant.

I hereby challenge any right handed player to a backwards guitar battle. Us lefties have the experience:-)

Agreed, but doesn't the foro still carry the emotional scars of Cpt Bob episode from way back? I always shiver a bit when I think about migrating or upfdating this place...

we don't need to change ownership, control, or whatever and have another Cpt bob episode.
Just maybe do something which doesn't ultimately lead to complete death sooner or later, like it is right now? Not sure exactly what the options are and maybe there really is no option (technically/software, etc.) and I'm too optimistic and naive.
I won't mention this again as I already have done it and it seems like maybe most are ok with the way it is, fine with me.

Is Simon still in charge of the Foro? With the various deletions, log-in blockages, and other glitches mentioned up-thread, has anyone checked with Simon to see if he is aware of what is going on? Maybe he is just letting the Foro run itself, sort of like the Deist's conception of God, who created the universe and then withdrew, letting it run like a clock, according to His rules. Or maybe it is like the old idea of a static universe, gradually running down. Anyway, it might be worth checking with Simon.

Bill

Arash -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 26 2026 15:46:39)

I sent a PM in November last year asking about the issue that nobody can join since July to which he replied that there are problems with email, old software and anti-scamming regulations and he is working on it. That's all I know

I am in contact with Simon via Instagram. He seems busy because now when I message him on there, it takes him weeks to get back to me, usually quite briefly.

If any of the computer programmers here who would know how to handle the technical aspects of a migration / upgrade want to reach out to him, Instagram seems to be the best place to do that.

Escribano -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 26 2026 21:50:56)

Hoster had an outage, had to restore from a backup.

Escribano -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 26 2026 21:55:15)

It costs more money nowadays, security gets tighter, storage costs escalate in inverse proportion to physical disk costs and there is very little traffic. It’s not technical. Migration is not too difficult, it is the cost of the data, sound files etc. A pain in the arse, frankly.

Escribano -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 26 2026 22:04:43)

Yep, it sucks. So many scamming bots. No low cost, standard email sending options without even more money. I can spend some more, take a lot of time out of earning but I don’t see the returns at the moment. Very little traffic, tiny ad revenue opportunities. It hobbles along for now.

eccullen -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 26 2026 23:38:07)

Simon,

What do you need?

Ricardo -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 27 2026 15:36:53)

Thanks for your time and effort put in to this old rickety hobby. It is what it is, and frankly it works. I for one would not use the social media equivalent version if it was on Insta or Facebook or whatever. I have been using "music theory" on Facebook and it was a nightmare at some point, I was cyber bullied/harassed by some nut job for a good week and a half. Typing with one finger also problematic for me since I don't use that social media junk on my computer, I am sure others are the same.

People can use foro if they need to or want to, reference the archives which are extensive, it is the only place like it I have seen on the internet. Hope we can keep going for a while.

silddx -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 27 2026 17:51:36)

I wholeheartedly agree, Ricardo.

Stu -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 28 2026 11:10:05)

Yeah I agree too.

I often wish for some kind of inbetween zone that modernises slightly but keeps it basic and retains what makes it this way in the 1st place.

I guess its just an active member thing really? It's just not that busy.... but I suppose the idea is that people are spoiled by the new forms of social media and forums that they can get down with this?

anyway old ground. and hijacking you thread sorry mark!

Arash -> RE: guitar issues (Jan. 28 2026 11:35:38)

I hate facebook, Tik Tok and all that social media crap too, never had an account in any of them, and really like the old school style. And I really appreciate the work of Simon all these years. I had an online community too and know how time consuming all this can be (with no return except maybe appreciation sometimes).

However, it is a fact that communities live from new members who are interested in flamenco as well (circulation). Foro would be much more active if that was the case (inactivity does not come out of nowhere, it has reasons and the reason is not just the other alternatives nowadays and people being somewhere else).

It is just a shame that nobody can join, plus, not even the few long term members left can sometimes log back in (estebanana as an example).
So, this is why I said slow death.

Anyways, I guess it is what it is and needs to be accepted.

I completely agree, Arash. My wife and I have never had an account with Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, or any other so-called "social media" platforms. We have never owned an I-phone, Smart phone, or any other type of cell phone. We get by just fine with a landline and a message machine. We don't need to be available "24/7." I have enjoyed the Foro for many years, and rickety as it is now, I still check in regularly, as every so often someone posts something interesting. The thing is, most of the questions posed by members have been posed and answered many times before, if only the member would type in the proper "key words" that bring up the appropriate threads. I can understand Simon not accepting new members, but I don't understand why some old-timers with a wealth of knowledge, like Stephen Faulk, are now excluded from logging in. Is it deliberate, or is it a glitch in the system that runs the Foro? Reading Simon's posts above, it seems to me that the Foro is just running out of steam. If it eventually closes down, we can be thankful we were a part of it when the going was good. It will have been a good run indeed.

Bill
