bahen -> need help with my rasguedo (Apr. 24 2006 17:41:02)

The continuous rasguedo has always alluded me and now, in the middle of my exams, I intend to dedicate some time to it to get it down, once and for all. Specifically, the continuous rasguedo I'm talking about can be seen in Ramin's "canito" video (www.flamenco-teacher.com) - how do I do that? Is it just x-a-m-i-i^ and that I just need to work on speed?

The link to canito is:

(I hope Ramin doesn't mind)

The way I learned to do it was to start with an upstroke with the p, going across the bass strings, then to bring down the a across the treble strings and the i across the treble strings. I gather it's supposed to look like a "rotating" motion.

(But I'm not a pro, good or even veteran. So don't take my word for anything...)

Ryan, thanks for the advice! [:)] But that's not what I was thinking of - if you watch the video, the thumb is mostly stationary and does not contribute to the machine-gun rasguedos.

Hi Bahen

I am just wondering why you aren't asking Ramin, on his forum? I mean if he's going to the trouble to upload videoes there, then that forum is surely the best place to ask questions? Ramin is a member here too and I just think it would be polite to try that first.

bahen -> RE: need help with my rasguedo (Apr. 25 2006 9:42:13)

Hey Jon - that's a good idea, and I have no problem doing that. It's just that I have forgotten my login and p/w for that forum and thought it would be a less of a hassle to just ask here. You're right, however, that it'd be more polite; I was simply weighing the utility of going through the password and login retrieval system [;)] Hence the impetus to ask here, rather than there.

Either way, if anyone can help me with my rasguedo question, I'd be quite grateful. Besides, I don't think Ramin would be slighted by me asking here, seeing as to how the flamenco community is fairly small and we're one big family anyway [:)] [:)].

Ramin can give you some great tips to practise. What I found is you need to first build up a lot of strength using a lot of pressure (especially in the pinky) only to take most of the pressure away when playing. Think "Kung Fu" [:)]

Very well, I will commence with the Kung-fu lessons next week. [:D]

Hi Bahen. I'm also a beginner, but I've gotten to the point where my rasgeos are sounding pretty even, so I thought I'd give my two bits: Definately use a metronome. Set it so that you move each finger with a beat. Keep your thumb planted on the sixth string, but once you get better try taking the thumb off of the string and do floating rasgeous. this will help to build strength. Honestly it has taken me almost a year to get a decent sound from my rasgeos, and I've got a ways to go still! Also try to do rasgeos even when your not with your guitar. If I'm sitting in a chair, I'm almost always rapping my fingers on the wood, or the steering wheel, whatever. This improves your strength. Hope this helps!

Hey fevictor, the metronome idea is great! Why didn't I think of that? [:D] I've been doing the rasguedo-on-everything thing for a while now - cups, chairs, steering wheel - and it drives people nuts. I have yet to ask Ramin about the rasguedos in his Canito clip, but will get on it right after exams [:@] [:@].

Thanks again for the advice.
