Firefrets -> The tasty guitar thread (Oct. 29 2025 20:05:55)

I came across this amazing guitar while looking for info on the old ebony / ivory necks found on old Stauffer / Martins, and just wanted to share it. The effort involved is staggering.

I figured it was a good excuse to have a tasty guitar thread.

You can see lots of images at https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/503932

This is what I was originally pondering over. Image taken from http://www.earlymartin.com/stauffer.html

My favorite ‘tasty’ guitars after Santos etc are the Stradivari guitars

Similar neck as above - do you know how they were made?

Veneers or wedges maybe?

Now this is what I'd call tasty:

I'll bet the trebles on that thing are sweet.

A word now from a curmudgeon:

I've heard that Chinese people avoid restaurants that look too fancy, figuring if the owners put so much into the appearance of the place then the food won't be so great.

No comments on those above? Lopez Nieto makes his own copies or in the style of gaudy baroque guitars, but they are pretty crazy. I think his no. 281 takes the cake.

Not sure I get the rationale behind some of the starting bids. A Santos starting at €1500 and a Torres at €6000? I wonder what the hammer prices were.

Regardless, there's some beautiful instruments in that collection. I like them all, even n. 281.

Could the underlying construction be similar to El Planeta's? This Lopez Nieto is very highly decorated: it could well come "with a bullfighter jacket and hat or something."

At least a cloth bag case made with a decommissioned matador cape.

At the end of the book there is a table that explains it.
