I’d like to try that magnet film. If the top is spruce I stick a light bulb in the guitar and also mark the cracks on the outside. Cedar a bit harder because it’s not translated enough to see through with a light bulb. Thank you Orson for risking the wrath of uptight gatekeeping luthier bros, I learned something. Which is something I’ll rarely admit.

I also use an LED light puck and magnets inside and out to mark where the cleat goes and then also magnets to glue the cleats. What I like about this idea is the ability to keep the glued cleat away from the top while positioning it. I doubt I'd use this, in part because it's kind of specific to its own cleats although it wouldn't be a big deal to make your own to fit the jig. The way I see it, it's another helpful jig that most already have their own work-arounds for and also, at least to me, sits in the category of one of the thousands of useful gadgets out there that mainly exist to part people from their ill or not-so-ill begotten gains. Not sure about gatekeeper wrath. Don't really see much of that on this foro, most of the luthiers here are pretty free and open with sharing info. I've learned a pile of stuff hanging out here.

Orson was making a joke, I ranted a while back that guitar makers do this every day and we have ideas and skills that you can’t necessarily articulate in words, and that I was stressed out by non builders who articulate guitar making principles with no real hands on experience. I find it annoying that I can’t find words to refute the kibitzing, because the knowledge I have is in part something you can’t express in words. I did gate keep a bit on the other forum, because it bothered me. Then I realized I shouldn’t be there because the moderators let the non builders run wild. So I intentionally sabotaged myself by doing naughty things and eventually they said comply or be lifetime banned. I did not comply 😆- the world is bigger than one website, and getting banned frees me up to be a more focused nuisance here. Getting kicked out was good, one less place my compulsive guitar internet chat routine can develop.

Yeah….that orsonw. I’ve always said he was trouble… I never joined that other site. Never wanted to. It took me years to convince myself to join this one as I really didn’t think I had anything to say. I was probably right, but then I joined and it released the blabber-fingered Kraken…

Smart idea. It looks like the magnet is on edge, with the non magnetic plane between the N and S sides of the magnet, facing the top. Doubly smart, as that line is very fine and also indicates the orientation of the magnet.

I've seen Dan Erlewine advertise the film etc, but if honest it's a bit limited. I use round neodymium magnets, and masking tape. I tape a magnet on the outside, and then create a double sided tape simply by folding the masking tape. I then stick a cleat to the 2nd magnet, and either feed it in through the soundhole using my hand, or tape it to a small stick etc. That way I can get a cleat in regardless of where it is needed.
