Hey,

Years ago writer and broadcaster Robert Elms presented a three-part documentary 'Bullfight' (Maverick, 2001). In the second episode (I think), Robert is describing the day in 1992 when banderillero Manolo Montoliú was fatally gored. In the background, there is some music playing which to my lay ears sounds like it's sampled cante jordo.

(1) listen to audio on imgur
NB: may have to unmute, as imgur defaults to mute

I'm getting on now, and I would like to finally find out what the music is as it's been bugging me for decades! I even contacted Maverick & Robert some years back to no avail (no reply in either case).

Shazam caught the same underlying song having been sampled elsewhere:

Can anyone ID the actual track in (1) or the sampled original cante?

THANKS in advance!

Sounds like Camarón de la Isla. Someone here will know.

well, "como el agua" is from camaron, but as tangos it cannot be considered as cante jondo. I think many guys pick it up as a cover...

The fact that you are attracted over years by a single phrase of cante should make you think. In good flamenco, you will find this quite often. El grito. No posing. That is what you problably meant by cante jondo.
I would say it's about "cantar con corazon", over limit but controlled. Then the melisms won't come out artificial or wheepy. To do this well, the cantaor needs to be on his tone, and give full power. If he finds the equilibrum, he will consume himself in his cante.

A bit like speedway, or a motorcycle burnout...just fantastic.

oh good lord those dj's or whatever they are have no freaking ear. They extracted parts of some dude's singing (not Camaron), not sure who or what they were singing since we just get short snips, probably buleria and tangos, then they set the out of context melodies over wrong chords. Good god, not once but 3xs HOLY.....[:@]

I don't think that is "Como al agua" he is singing there, with the "primo de me alma" tag. The "con Alegria, con Alegria"....is like buleria corta maybe but not a full line of verse, there is missing words lol, then the tango estribillo "yali yali, yali yali," etc. What a mess. Sounds like some random Madrid cantaor for baile, who the heck knows.

Check the credits of the film, maybe there is info in there. However, better to just educate yourself in real cante. This is just so bad due to the wrong tonos misleading the ear. If some one did this to my music I would hunt them down, and maybe bash their head into the dj turn table a few hundred times. [:D][:D]
