I bought my first Media Luna. It's a 1996 Gravina 7 peghead negra.

The seller was wonderful to talk with and demoed it on WhatsApp calls for me a few times, along with other guitars he has, and gave me loads of information and its history, this was my favourite of the guitars I heard and saw.

The rosette is beautiful.

I am interested in scholarly opinions of the guitar, good or bad :) It plays wonderfully and sounds beautiful and that's what really matters.

Indeed I did! And you're right, he is an absolute gent! I give profound thanks to the foro's johnnefastis for the introduction.

Thank you [:D]

Diego's shop is Soniquete on Reverb, and I cannot recommend him highly enough, he has a regularly changing stock of wonderful flamenco guitars, all chosen by him. He sells Fustero machines too. https://reverb.com/uk/shop/diegos-gear-garage-106

I just unpacked it and tuned it. Good lord, I was not prepared for how fabulous it is, so easy to play, such a beautiful tone. I am totally smitten already, she's just gorgeous! Looking forward to playing more later.

Weighs 1.545kg so about 300g heavier than my two others, are negras a bit heavier than blancas?

Diego packed it fantastically well, I doubt even the IDF could have caused any damage.

Interesting bracing, not seen this before. Also some cleats but no sign of a crack or repair or anything topside.

Bracing is a modified Conde pattern from the ‘70ies.
The original bracing pattern was different as it didn’t have the 2 closing bars.
In the late 80ies Mariano Conde, as said, modified the pattern: to make it short, that bracing pattern was lately used by Ricardo Sanchis Carpio both for his premium guitars and for the guitars he made for the Gravina shop.
Mariano instead preferred to use parallel bars for the pattern used by the shop in Felipe V.

Speaking of sector structures, my conde is a 5 2 structure, which doesn't seem very common.

That’s great information to have, Echi, Diego said he felt RSC might have had a hand in this guitar.

Thank you!

Congrats. Pegs and negras are rare. The rosewood is always heavier, and since the idea of pegs is to lighten the weight it seems an odd choice so we don't see it often. The tie block is very much like Sanchis Lopez style with white cap and colored rectangle with red boarder. The 12-hole is almost certainly a modification. Let's hear some more siguiriyas!

What are the rectangular black spots on the right side?

Congratulations Nigel. I like that you write 'My first Media Luna', as if planning more!

Here is my 2002 Atocha bracing, seems to fit this description?

Rosette is similar, same central mosaic with different outer rings.
This 2002 Atocha is one of my favorite media lunas that I've played.

Thanks Orson!

Ooh, yes, if this one is anything to go by, I will be planning more :)

Interesting you have such a similar rosette and bracing. Cool.

Mazeltov
That’s a very Roman mosaic inspired rosette. I approve this message.

Here is the Atocha rosette with the different outer rings.
Unfortunately this guitar is orange. Tragically it has very beautiful cypress and bear claw spruce, it would look so much better if it wasn't covered in orange.

Riconde traffic-cone-Conde disagrees. Orange is the best. Orange you glad your Conde ain't French polished?

Echi -> RE: My first Media Luna - Yep, another Conde thread (Apr. 9 2025 15:52:40)

Both guitars are made by Ricardo.
OrsonW is right, that is the bracing pattern I was referring to: the 2 long struts are protruding to the upper bout.

The rosettes share the same central design but they are actually outsourced to 2 different Makers. In the first case the rosette was made by Karin Rost, a German shop specialised in rosettes. Even Faustino Conde bought rosettes there in the late seventies.
The motif is taken from an original Ramirez design (smaller and more detailed) from the sixties . In fact Sabicas used to play with a Ramirez with that very rosette motif (made by Manuel Caceres). The guitar made by Lester De Voe for Sabicas used to have the same mosaic and even Caceres kept using a similar mosaic.

I guess the Conde negra has been refinished. Judging from the color of the back it was originally tinted with the usual red-orange.
My 2 cents are that the little squares are wood diamonds as the guitar has been repaired at some stages.
This shouldn’t be a problem if the guitar plays nicely.

Thanks so much for all this information, Echi.

Think you're right about the refin. This are traces of red around the sound hole in places.

How interesting about the LdV / Sabicas rosette. Here it is https://www.flamencoguitarsforsale.net/en/lester-devoe-guitars/flamenco-guitar-lester-devoe-1982-sabicas/

You can find a few 1970s/ early 1980s Gravina 7 rosettes there even now.

Manitas de Lata -> RE: My first Media Luna - Yep, another Conde thread (Apr. 14 2025 11:14:16)

so , you both bought a repaired Conde without knowing ? ouch

So that German website , isnt the only one

This is incorrect. The seller told me about the cleats, but there is no sign of a crack or split on the top, as I explained earlier.

Manitas de Lata -> RE: My first Media Luna - Yep, another Conde thread (Apr. 14 2025 12:13:16)

yes , they seem on that cleat area , but also in others , hard to see , maybe pulling off the strings and touch that area inside with your fingers.

The Orsow also seems but on the right side, but maybe only by touch you can confirm.

Altough if plays great , thats what it counts
