Now Ron, I'm not holding you responsibel or anything, but Radio Tarifa... really not my cup of tea at all!!!

Very odd, I just couldn't get into it at all. In fact I left before even hearing their encore.

I guess I can see the appeal, but the little snatches of flamenco (including the little Mick Jagger-esque lead singer's dancing) just left me craving the real thing and feeling frustrated with what was there.

The best bits were when the band did their 'climactic' pieces - you don't even notice the build up until you realise there is a certain fever in the audience - yes, those bits were impressive.

I love a lot of 'arabicy' (to coin a phrase my friend once used to describe a Lebanese restaurant!) music. I find it really haunting and stirring. I love flamenco. I love the way sometimes the two meet in flamenco, eg Zyryab. But this 'mish-mash' (I really can't think of another word), with cuban and all sorts of other bits thrown in. It was just too much. My head was hurting.

Dare I say it, maybe I'm just a bit too young?? The audience was a bit older. They seemed to really like it. Maybe it would grow on me.. but I'm not sure.

Yasmin Levy was on for an hour first and this didnt help - I'm afraid her Shakira-esque (albeit impressive) vocals didnt do anything for me, and the set was just a bit corny - at one point she insisted the audience joined in the singing!! Painful. All in all I think we were sat in our seats for 3 hours, which would have been a stretch even if Paco was playing (then again...!)

Ah well.

Sorry you didn't get into it Romanza!
That's life I suppose..
We all have different tastes.
Maybe you had somehow expected the band to be Flamenco oriented, which they are not.
I mainly went along to see Amir Haddad (who is an ace Flamenco guitarist...but he plays Oud with the band).
I'd heard a bit of their music on the Web..that's all really.

I've never ever been a loud/rock fan myself, but I was quite blown away by their sound.

I especially loved the North African style numbers that conjured up images of the decadent areas of Cairo in the 30's and 40's in my head.

I thought the musicians were very talented...the wind-instrument players just knocked me out!
They were also very easy going and a good fun band.
I just ended up going along with their stuff and had a really good evening out.

But this really is a "World Music" band.

If anybody went along to one of their concerts expecting to see/hear Flamenco, then I wouldn't blame them for being disappointed.
(Although they do an absolutely cracking Tangos! [;)])

cheers

Ron

Hi Ron. Yes I guess I expected more of a flamenco feel, so I was a bit dissapointed in that sense. Should have done my research I guess. Looking back, it was just a bit different, but there's nothing wrong with that of course, just a completely new sound to me. I think I'd like to listen to it in a different setting perhaps.
Romanza
