rombsix -> Jason McGuire Flamenco Guitar Cutaway Negra Review (Dec. 9 2024 3:46:13)

I got me a cutaway negra by none other than our very own Jason McGuire. Check it out and take a listen here:

I've played a lot of great guitars over the years, and I am utterly flabbergasted at how Jason has learned to make guitars of this caliber in such a short period of time as a luthier. I wanted a negra because I've been leaning more towards blancas for the past decade and I figured it was time for a change. And wow - this guitar sounds *dark* and *deep*. The guitar is extremely well-balanced from string to string. Going from the basses to the trebles in a run or while playing arpeggios feels like a very smooth transition - the basses don't overpower the trebles, and the trebles all sound even and warm.

The guitar is very, very resonant. When you play an E phrygian chord, you feel your entire chest vibrate. Just doing a golpe makes you feel like the entire top is moving - such a wonderful sensation! And the guitar is super light!

The playability is on another level - perhaps one of the easiest, if not *the* easiest, guitar I've ever played. I can get through lengthy pieces replete with barre chords effortlessly. It has enough sizzle to sound really flamenco when pushed, but it sounds very mellow and silky when played softly.

The cutaway design is probably one of my absolute favorite as it works so well to allow instant access to the higher frets with zero obstruction, while also looking very cool.

I really, really recommend getting one of Jason's guitars!!!

Sounds good, Ramzi! Congrats! Jason is really cranking them out

I'm looking forward to hearing some more playing.

congratulations, Ramzi 🤗 she sounds nice, clean sound with clear fundamentals. very strong mid range and as you said a very pleasant rattle to it. lightweights always do have that magic to them, the airyness and the sensation of the whole instrument being very reactive. have fun with it 🙌🏼

sounds nice! Guajiras should be no problem with capo at 1. [:D]

Recorded with a Shure SM57 microphone (mono in the center) and the James May Engineering Ultra Tonic pickup (stereo panned hard left and hard right) into an Antelope Audio Zen Quadro Synergy Core interface with some compression, limiting, and reverb. What do you think of the sound?

I listened with decent Bluetooth headphones. Sounds very good but a little clipped, so crashes a tiny bit on the ras but I am pretty deaf in one ear from my days on bass in an Indy band. Might be the limiter or gain, perhaps? Not boomy, nice reverb. Nice playing btw.

Very possible [:D] I'm so lazy these days, I don't want to do any editing in post, so I try to do everything with DSP live, and that can never sound as good as doing it "properly" LOL - I'll keep working on it.

Glad you like it overall - I'm thrilled with the guitar [:D]
