I just revisited this article I wrote in 2018 and it’s still interesting to me. Maybe a few of you would enjoy it~

Great article.

I've always liked the look of those Faulk Fishbox guitars. They're really cool, or as they say in Quebec, sharpie-doo (OK, nobody actually says that in Quebec, or anywhere else that I know of, TBH, but it sounds like something that should be 👍).

Thanks, a fine article. I especially like the Tàpiesque disquisition on the transformative power of 'mean' materials; a welcome reminder.

And beautiful craftsmanship, as always.

The moment I opened the link, the image of the three gitaa gave me a flashback to a period many years ago when this song was a cheerful way to start the day. Haven't heard it for a long time, but it's still rather jolly:

Silly gaijins!

People sing that stupid song at festivals with street dancing 😆

The thing that got me was the question. Are they stinky?

Cause you and I know some fish boxes are stinky to various degrees, and let’s face it some of us don’t mind it as long as it’s relatively clean, and once you start stroking those strings it really doesn’t matter.

Ok, heading back to teaching myself how to Bluesky…

No the boxes are not stinky. I wash them with water and set them in the sun. The UV light here is so strong it kills all the bacteria. Unfortunately the best one I made last March was part of an NHK TV program and they own the footage and I can’t access it now or use it. I made this really great Fishbox three string G modal tuning guitar. I thinned the top, which was made of fishbox slats, to 3mm. The logos and printing on the outside, thinned from the inside. I know how to make them both loud and pretty sounding at this point, and that one was awesome. During the show filming the director asked me on camera to give it to the celebrity star of the show, who ‘accidentally’ found my studio and wandered in.

So of course I smiled and said “oh yes I think that’s great idea” which kind if pissed me off, and put the star artist who is a theatre actor in Tokyo on the spot. He didn’t need the guitar and I wanted to sell the guitar. NHK ( which is rich as f¥¥k) sent me a measly 30,000¥ look up the exchange rate.

So I cannot show the photos in public. I guess I’ll make another one…

I’m on Bluesky sf-guit-artist.bsky.social
